Let The Search Begin (Finally)

OK, I've got to admit this surprised me. From a Dartmouth release: (LINK)

As Interim Director of Athletics and Recreation Peter Roby ’79 prepares to complete his tenure, a national search has begun for Dartmouth’s next athletics director, President Philip J. Hanlon ’77 announced this week. Roby took on the interim position last year with the understanding that he would serve through June 2022.

And . . .

The search committee, chaired by Associate Dean for the Social Sciences John Carey, will be assisted by Daniel Parker and DeLaina Jordan of the search firm Parker Executive Search, which recently conducted successful searches for the athletic directors at the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Brown. The committee hopes to have a new athletics director in place by July 1.

From the "sports" link on the Parker Executive Search website: (LINK)

We understand the sensitivity and urgency of finding a coach or sports executive. That’s why we complete most coach searches in 10 to 14 days and can complete executive searches in four to five weeks.

Green Alert Take: I'm sure they can complete the search in "four to five weeks," but I'm still surprised the search is only beginning now, given that Roby went public in November with the news that he will not be pursuing the permanent position. You just have to hope the absolute perfect AD candidate for Dartmouth didn't accept another position in the 13 months since Harry Sheehy's departure.

The release lists the search committee for the new athletic director. In addition to Carey, the members are (in alphabetical order):

• Jeff Blackburn '91, trustee (former Dartmouth football player)
• Leslie Butler, associate professor of history
• Porscha Dobson, director and coach of Dartmouth track and cross country
• Dino Koff, director of financial aid
• Sara Lockwood '22, women's club volleyball player
• Tracy Hagan Mallory '92, chair of the Dartmouth Athletic Advisory Board (former soccer and lacrosse player)
• Anjali Pant '24, women's rugby player
• Taurus Samuels '22, men's basketball player
• Buddy Teevens '79, head football coach
• Doug Van Citters '99, engineering professor, faculty athletics advisor (former rower)

In recognition of yesterday's International Women's Day, Dartmouth football posted a graphic featuring former Big Green quality control assistants Callie Brownson and Jennifer King as well as current assistant Mickey Grace:

Dartmouth has been at the forefront of the movement to eliminate tackling to the ground in practice. Former Cornell head coach Jim Knowles, the national defensive coordinator of the year at Oklahoma State in 2021 and now Ohio State DC, embraces that philosophy. In this video he explains that the tragic death of former Cornell teammate Tom McHale, whose brain showed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), played a role in his approach to practicing tackling.

Green Alert Take: The comments after the video suggest that not all fans of tOSU are buying in when Knowles says, "You teach them that it's OK to miss tackles if you're in the right position."

EXTRA POINT
Over the weekend Mrs. BGA and I watched A League of Their Own. I am starting to wonder if a league like that might be the only professional baseball we might see this year.

OK, you got me. Minor league baseball will be largely (but not completely) unaffected this year and has actually begun spring training (LINK) but you get the point.
