Sunday Stuff

The latest entry in the series from Dartmouth football welcoming new members of the team who will arrive next month introduces Jabari Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end from University Laboratory School and Zachary, La.:

Jabari Johnson is one of two players on this year's roster from Louisiana. The other is junior wide receiver Jarmone Sutherland of New Orleans, Arch Manning's favorite target when he played at Isidore Newman High School.

Wonder how many players Dartmouth will have from each state this fall? Glad you asked. Here's what I worked up this morning:

14 – Texas
13 – California
11 – Florida
10 – Pennsylvania
9 – New Jersey
8 – Ohio
8 – Illinois
6 – Georgia
4 – Colorado
4 – Massachusetts
4 – North Carolina
4 – Washington
4 – Tennessee
3 – New York
2 – Alabama
2 – Indiana
2 – Louisiana
2 – Maryland
2 – Missouri
2 – Wisconsin
1 – Alaska
1 – Arizona
1 – Connecticut
1 – Kansas
1 – Minnesota
1 –South Carolina
1 – West Virginia
1 – Virginia

Also:
2 – Germany
1 – Canada

For comparison, I went back to the oldest Dartmouth media guide in my collection – 1974 – and worked up a list from that fall. It came out like this:

14 – New York
9 – Illinois
8 – California
8 – Massachusetts
8 – Ohio
6 – Michigan
5 – Connecticut
5 – New Jersey
4 – Pennsylvania
4 – Wisconsin
3 – Iowa
3 – Minnesota
3 – New Hampshire
2 – District of Columbia
2 – Florida
2 – Georgia
2 – Maryland
2 – Missouri
2 – Tennessee
1 – Alaska
1 – Arizona
1 – Indiana
1 – Kansas
1 – Maine
1 – Nevada
1 – Oklahoma
1 – Oregon
1 – South Dakota
1 – Virginia
1 – Washington
1 – West Virginia

Also:
1 – Norway

Green Alert Take: Comparing the two lists, what has happened to New York since 1974? Yikes! And how about Florida and Georgia being such rarities back in '74?

A couple of former All-Ivy League offensive linemen from Dartmouth met up recently about 3,000 miles from Hanover. That's Evan Hecimovich '21, who came to Dartmouth from Lisle, Ill., and helped the Big Green to the 2021 title on the left while earning a spot on the all-league first team, and Kevin Noone '03, a product of LaSalle HS and Rydal, Pa., who twice made the All-Ivy first team on the right.

EXTRA POINT
What was it I wrote on this space back on May 26?

Two evenings ago Mrs. BGA and planted "mammoth" sunflowers that are supposed to grow as tall as 12 feet. We'll see, but I'm not holding my breath for a couple of reasons.

Good thing I wasn't holding my breath. A week or so after planting those sunflowers they sprouted. A week later they were looking pretty good. And another week or so after that there was one left. A couple of days later they were all gone.

I don't know if it was that pesky groundhog who I spotted out there two days ago that feasted on the sunflowers but I have my suspicions. Out of spite when I saw him the other day I let Griff the Wonder Dog launch himself out of the door to scare it away. The critter spotted my buddy at the last second and wisely ducked into a drainage culvert that runs under our driveway. Hopefully that encouraged him to think about a new home, although I doubt it.

In town the other day Mrs. BGA came across something that she thought might erase some of the disappointment wrought by the groundhog. These things are the opposite of mammoth, reaching maybe two fee high instead of 12, but they brought me a smile when she surprised me by planting them. I just hope you-know-who isn't hungry for a snack!
