Think About It

A day after spending 2 hours, 45 minutes that I'll never get back watching the Ivy League preseason media conference, I tuned into Buddy Teevens' Dartmouth update on Zoom and was struck by something he pointed out.

Let me back up for a second. Like a lot of coaches, Teevens doesn't wasted time surfing the Internet searching out tidbits about his team, the Ivy League, the FCS or even college football. Because that's more up my alley, it's usually me bringing those things to him for a comment. This time, however, he was on top of it.

After noting that Dartmouth was chosen (along with Harvard) as a preseason favorite to win the Ivy League, Teevens had this to say:

"We only had one guy that was a first-team (preseason) All-Ivy player. I made mention of that to our players. 'OK, they don’t think you are all very good, but they think you are going to play well.' "

To be clear, the official Ivy League media poll and the preseason all-conference rankings are done by different entities. Although Teevens spun the apparent contradiction in a way intended to fire up his players for having their individual talents disrespected, the reality is it's something in which the coaches, players and program should take pride. What it says is that, as Aristotle would have it, in Dartmouth's case "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." And that, my friends, is the perfect definition of team.

Teevens did backtrack just a bit after mentioning what he saw as a slight, saying, "It's kind of a credit to (our players but) we've got better players than they are giving us credit for. We graduated some good guys but we have good players behind them as well."

Speaking of good players they graduated, one from the Class of '17 was the subject of a story out of Calgary headlined, Stampeders defensive lineman Folarin Orimolade is going with the Flo. The piece was triggered by the former Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year's first pick six since high school. From the story (LINK):

“Orimolade's teammates weren't surprised he stepped up and made the big play.  Earlier this season, fellow defensive lineman Sean Lemon called Orimolade the best kept secret in the CFL.

He said that's not the case anymore.

"The secret is out, the secret is definitely out," Lemon said.

Another recent grad getting some ink (or bytes?) is former Dartmouth defensive end Niko Lalos '20, who just signed with the New Orleans Saints after being let go by the New York Giants. From an SB Nation piece headlined Saints sign 2 linebackers to bolster their depth chart; The New Orleans Saints signed linebackers Jon Bostic and Niko Lalos this afternoon after having various injuries at the position was this about the former Big Green standout (LINK):

Will he be an exceptional talent for the Saints? Likely not. However, having depth and a camp body to compete for the Saints in the preseason is a nice addition, and who knows, maybe he makes the roster as a special teamer if he shows out the next two weeks.

Fansided, meanwhile, has a piece headlined, 3 things to know about Saints newcomers Niko Lalos and Jon Bostic that probably won't teach you anything you didn't know about Lalos, but might make you grimace.

Not once but twice the piece notes he went to Darmouth. Once might be a typo but leaving the first T out of the school name suggests the author isn't particularly familiar with the Ivy League. (LINK

Green Alert Take: I'm gonna guess the writer wouldn't ever write Havard or Princeon. Right?

The Columbia season preview went up on BGA Premium last night. Cornell will be posted tonight and Harvard tomorrow night followed in order by Penn, Princeton and Yale Sunday.

EXTRA POINT
I mentioned last week that I finally got my digital account with the Vermont state library back up and downloaded a book on which I'd had a hold for some time. I was thrilled when it finally became available and now have it on my Kindle for 14 days before it disappears into the ether.

With BGA back up and running, that may not be enough time.

I've had the book now for an entire week and haven't read one word. I just hope it will be available on Nov. 20.
