EXTRA POINT
Another day jumping off the Interstate to see a little more of the country. Our first stop honored my Danish heritage in Elk Horn, Iowa. We checked out a Danish windmill and then visited the Danish museum. That Certain Mother BGA, who was born and raised in Copenhagen, would have loved it.
A little later it was 25-plus miles on the White Pole Scenic Byway for a taste of cross country travel before the Interstates. The road stretches from Provincetown on Cape Cod to Bishop, Calif.
Next game a side trip to the largest wooden nickel in the world, followed by a stop at the Iowa 80 Truckstop, the self-professed largest in the world. We stopped at a lot of these places when I worked for Bekins Moving & Storage between college and grad school . . . but none quite like this!
We capped the day by pitching our tent at a campground in western Illinois that is hosting a vintage travel trailer weekend. On display are some wonderful old units brought back to life by some very handy and proud people. I'd love to peek inside all of 'em. ;-)
