Catching Up

Before your regular Sunday morning recap, the local Valley News has a story spun out of the latest update on the condition of Dartmouth head coach Buddy Teevens. The story pretty much reprises what the college posted on Thursday but does include this about Sammy McCorkle stepping up to run the program in his mentor's absence (LINK):

“Buddy has included Sammy in everything for years, so he’d be ready for the opportunity to be a head coach, whether it was here or someplace else,” (Athletic Director Mike) Harrity said. “If we didn’t have so much of an heir apparent, this situation would be harder.”

McCorkle said he’s worked to keep the team’s structure and organizational practices intact while injecting new life into a team that lost twice in overtime and three times by fewer than four points last season.

“It’s going to take a village to keep this thing going and successful,” the 50-year old McCorkle said. “We’re going to continue with what Coach Teevens developed here.”

The Big Green kicks off its season Saturday with a difficult challenge at intrastate rival New Hampshire, which did nothing to damage its reputation as a national power yesterday afternoon.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN 45, NEW HAMPSHIRE 42

Unbelievably, 10 years after the FBS Chippewas defeated the Wildcats on a field goal with no time left they did it again. This time it was on a 47-yarder as the clock expired.

Max Brosmer completed 32-of-50 passes for 493 yards and four touchdowns for UNH (1-1) but the star of the game was running back Dylan Laube. Although he carried just seven times for 30 yards and one touchdown, the speedster piled up 295 receiving yards on 12 catches (24.6 yards per). Of those 295 yards, fully 262 were after the catch. In his postgame comments, CMU (1-1) coach Jim McElwain had this to say:

"They didn't do anything that we didn't expect, they got the ball to (Laube) and he made us look foolish. There's this game, Where's Waldo? Find out where Waldo is and make sure you've got him covered and we didn't."

Dartmouth knows all about Laube, who had touchdown runs of 53 and 75 yards in a loss to the Big Green two years ago before sitting out last year's matchup between the teams because of injury.

New Hampshire put up 538 yards of offense on the MAC team yesterday, allowing 440. Attendance was 17,302.

LEHIGH 14, MERRIMACK 12

A big sack by Lehigh standout linebacker Mike DeNucci took the Warriors (0-2) out of field goal position in the final two minutes and another sack on the following play locked up the Mountain Hawks' (1-1) first win under assistant Kevin Cahill, the former Yale assistant. In a game moved to Harvard Stadium because of storm damage and power issues at Merrimack, offense was in short supply. Merrimack was just 1-for-14 on third down and 10-of-27 passing. Lehigh, meanwhile, managed just 69 yards rushing. Attendance was 1,562.

VILLANOVA 42, COLGATE 19

Villanova (2-0) quarterback Connor Watkins pierced the Raiders (0-2) defense for 310 yards on just eight completions in 11 attempts aided by completions of 60, 67 and 68 yards. Nova's touchdown drives  covered 61, 67, 74, 75 and 88 yards as the Wildcats marched down the field with impunity. Combined with last week's 65-0 loss at Syracuse, the Raiders now have allowed 107 points in their first two games. The start of this one was delayed 40 minutes by lightning and there was a 78-minute delay after just 14 minutes on the field. Attendance was listed at 5,101.

They can't get enough Bobo in Seattle and now there's yet another terrific story on former Dartmouth receiver Mike Bobo's '92 receiver son Jake, who even the Seahawks' veterans are learning from. Check out the story HERE.

EXTRA POINT

That Certain Nittany Lion '16 spent the weekend in beautiful Cape May, N.J., celebrating the impending marriage of a college buddy. Gotta admit, when I heard how warm the ocean was on the southern tip of the Jersey Shore and I was spending the weekend watching and writing up football practices, I was more than a bit envious. There's nothing quite like a September weekend at the shore when the water is still warm and the "shoobies" have packed up and gone back home.
