This And That

With Dartmouth's second intrasquad scrimmage in the books there's no practice today. Check out BGA Premium tonight for the always popular, Questions for Coach where interim head coach Sammy McCorkle answers a selection of questions submitted by you, the BGA readers.

Dartmouth has brief a short update about head coach Buddy Teeven from his wife Kirsten HERE. It's not a surprise, but she confirms he will not be returning this season.

A piece headlined Who Owns Every NFL Team reminds us that former Dartmouth quarterback Mike Brown '57 owns the Cincinnati Bengals. (LINK)

A story headlined How Pete Lembo became the face of South Carolina football's Beamer Ball 2.0 mentions his early days as a Dartmouth assistant. From the story (LINK):

"My dream was to be a head coach," Lembo said. "Whether that was a small Division III school where I could go be there for 30 years or maybe an Ivy League school if I could work my way up to a place like that. But your career takes different twists and turns."

#

And speaking of former Dartmouth assistants, Joe Moglia, who went on to fame and fortune as CEO of TD Ameritrade and head coach at Coastal Carolina, has proposed a plan for revenue sharing in the new world of college athletics. Under his plan each of the 65 biggest schools would divvy up $25 million for players with freshmen receiving $100,000, sophs $200,000, juniors $300,000 and seniors $400,000. Check out this quick video:

It is still a week before the Ivy League kicks off, but Yale appears in the "Also Receiving Votes" section of both prominent FCS polls with Princeton and Harvard getting some respect from the coaches. Week One opponent New Hampshire is 11th in both polls and old friend Holy Cross is fifth in both.

EXTRA POINT
Regular visitors to this electronic precinct know that this summer I finally replaced my aging MacBook Air with a new laptop. I had delayed and delayed buying a new computer for just one reason: I didn't want to spend the money.

It wasn't until I started using the new one that I fully understood just how problematic the old one had become.

I believe this is the fourth Mac laptop I've had, dating back to my days at the newspaper, and despite getting heavy use and being toted around in a backpack to a ridiculous number of games and practices in all kinds of weather, they've held up well. A couple of laptops back I did have to pay a local high school football coach whose day job involved fixing these things to help me out, but that's it.

As I was wrapping up yesterday's story on the Dartmouth scrimmage I happened to notice the battery on this new computer was down to 23 percent despite being plugged in. I monkeyed with the power cord but couldn't get the indicator light saying the computer was charging to come on. Fearful that the machine was going to cut out before I posted my story, I dug out a jump drive and hastily  moved the nearly finished story to my old computer just in case.

After a little Googling about potential charging issues, plugging and unplugging the power cord, cleaning the connector and then a little fiddling, the thing is charging just fine right now. But I'm done taking chances. The football coach who used to fix these things is retired and my Mac is informing me that I have 17 days remaining when I can still purchase AppleCare+.

I've never been a fan of extended warranties and by now you know I'm not much of one for spending money, but what happened last night scared me. As much as it pains me, I'm going pull the trigger.
