Saturday Stuff

Incoming linebacker Tyler Kessel is widely quoted in a media-day story for New Jersey's annual Phil Simms North-South High School All-Star Football Classic, which will take place on June 9. From the story (LINK):

Kessel said his top three colleges were Dartmouth, fellow Ivy League school the University of Pennsylvania and Lehigh University.

“I just loved the camaraderie at Dartmouth,” Kessel said. “Plus, their staff has been together for something like five or six years now, which you don’t see a lot. I can really see myself developing as a player and a person there.”

And . . .

Kessel said that his course of study at Dartmouth will most likely be economics.

Per the story, Kessel had 133 total tackles with 41 solos and 15 tackles for loss. All were team-highs.

That Certain Nittany Lion '16 became a Penn State football fan after I brought him and That Certain Dartmouth '14 to the PSU Blue-White game a few times. The familiarity he had with the campus and the fun he had rooting for the Lions played a big part in him applying to the school and graduating with a geography degree from Happy Valley.

I bring that up after reading this headline on the FootballScoop site: Minnesota is putting spring football behind a paywall; Gopher football is now a media entity, and spring practices are now content to be sold. (LINK)

Green Alert Take: Seems a little short-sighted to me.

The Dartmouth men's ice hockey team carried a 3-1 lead into the third period of yesterday's ECAC semifinals in Lake Placid only to see Cornell score two goals to go up 4-3, and then seal a 6-3 win with two empty netters. Attendance was listed as 4,015 but looked to be a significantly smaller in the ESPN+ broadcast from the 7,700-seat 1980 Herb Brooks Arena.

Cornell will now play in the finals against St. Lawrence, which shocked top-seeded Quinnipiac in the semis.

Dartmouth finishes the season at 13-10-9 while Cornell improves to 20-6-6.

EXTRA POINT
Timing is everything.

Today is the "strawberry pancake breakfast" fundraiser at the charming little West Newbury Hall and it features "pancakes, fresh strawberries, whipped cream, West Newbury maple syrup, locally sourced sausage, bacon, orange juice, milk, cider, tea, Upper Valley Coffee Roasters coffee."

There's a good six inches of snow on the ground already and it is really coming down, with upwards of 20 inches expected. I haven't seen a single car go by our house in two hours.

It's about a 1.5-mile walk to the breakfast. We'll be pulling on the boots and beginning to hike there as soon as I hit the "publish" button. I fear there will be a lot of food left over.
