A Look Back

With a capacity of 11,000, Dartmouth's Memorial Field is appropriately sized for this era of Ivy League football. It was a lot larger during the 1970s heyday of the Big Green.

On a quiet Monday in early August here's a look at a postcard showing the old east stands when they could sit 9,508. Capacity then was listed at 20,816. Parts of the old stands were repurposed in front of the newly constructed Floren Varsity House in 2006.

This schematic from an old media guide shows the former east stands stretched from the north end zone only to the south 20-yard line because of Leverone Field House. That oddity, which always annoyed coach Buddy Teevens, was rectified with the new stands, which do run end zone to end zone, albeit with several fewer rows in front of Leverone.

Am I the only one who thinks the U.S. team uniform Scottie Scheffler was wearing while winning the gold medal at the Olympics looked like something out of a beer-league softball game?
