Building On Buddy's Legacy

Curious what The Optimist and The Pessimist had to say after the Merrimack nailbiter and ahead of the Ivy League opener against Penn Saturday? Check out the column on BGA Overtime.

While Dartmouth has a new recruit commitment (see below) this headline out of Dartmouth summarizes the big news of the day about an enduring tribute to late football coach Buddy Teevens:

From the release (LINK):

The most ambitious component of the multi-faceted endeavor in Teevens’s memory is a new center that will extend elements of the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s Dartmouth Peak Performance program to all undergraduates and bring even greater collaboration across campus and with thought leaders around the world to the field of student mental health, wellness, and performance.

The college release identifies three initiatives:

• Kirsten and Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens ’79 Center for Peak Performance Fund which will offer the Dartmouth Peak Performance (DP2) "holistic approach to developing exceptional student-athletes and future leaders" to the rest of the student body.

• Kirsten and Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens ’79 Scholarship Fund

 • Football Program Excellence

Now for the latest addition to the recruiting class . . .

Going public with his intention to attend Dartmouth and play for the Big Green is speedy wide receiver Cameron Bates of Grayslake North High School and Grayslake, Ill. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Bates chose Dartmouth over offers from Colgate, North Dakota and Northern Iowa on Xwitter

Bates is also a gifted pitcher whose fastball has hit 89 mph.

Sagarin has Dartmouth as a two-point favorite at home against Penn this week with the home field advantage making the difference. The system would have the Quakers as a four-point favorite at Franklin Field.

The Daily Pennsylvanian has an advance story with junior wide receiver Jared Richardson under the headline, Penn football out for revenge in ‘personal’ Ivy opener against Dartmouth. (LINK)

Richardson considers the game personal because last year the Big Green defense limited the first-team All-Ivy League receiver to a season-low two catches for 18 yards while winning in overtime in Philly, 23-21.

Richardson told the Daily Pennsyvanian: "We plan to put them away. And put them away early.”

Also from the story:

(T)his year’s Quakers have the added advantage of being familiar with Dartmouth’s offensive scheme. Last week, the Quakers soundly defeated Colgate, which utilizes a multi-quarterback attack on offense similar to that of the Big Green.

While this approach is unlike many others in college football, Priore says that preparing to play it in consecutive weeks cuts down on the learning curve for Penn’s defense.

Green Alert Take: Does Penn know something we don't know? Nick Howard played against Hanover this year and isn't playing in Hanover this fall. ;-)

EXTRA POINT
Mrs. BGA bought me a bag of white quarter socks a few weeks back to replace tattered old ones that are a little (make that a lot) worse for the wear from hiking. Here's the thing. Although the socks are in a plastic bag, for some reason I don't fully understand they are joined together with those annoying plastic T-tags. The tags get so caught up in the threads of the socks that they can be almost impossible to remove and cutting them with scissors sometimes leaves detritus in the socks that you don't find until you are wearing them. And don't under any circumstances try to yank the T-tags out – which of course is what I tried to do yesterday. I only hope the threads I pulled loose while I was working on the tags don't lead to more holes.
