Game of Life Author To Investigate Duke

From Friday's Daily Princetonian:
"Former University president William Bowen GS '58 has been picked as one of two experts charged with investigating and reporting on Duke University's response to recent allegations of rape by members of its men's lacrosse team."

Bowen co-authored The Game of Life, the sepulchral 2000 look at college athletics and the 2003 follow, Reclaiming the Game, College Sports and Educational Values. As one of our legendary local baseball coaches would say, the assignment is "right in (Bowen's) wheelhouse."

Former Dartmouth quarterback Brian Mann is a baseball fan and so he probably knows all about Wally Pipp. It was Pipp, you'll recall, who surrendered the Yankees' first base job one day to Lou Gehrig. The Iron Horse, of course, held the slot for the next 14 years. Sonny Cumbie is no Lou Gehrig, but it doesn't look as if he's going to let Mann reclaim the starting quarterback position with the Los Angeles Avengers any time soon. Cumbie has thrown 30 touchdowns to three interceptions since replacing Brian under center and was named the Arena League's Most Surprising Player at midseason. ... By the way, for an interesting take on the Wally Pipp-Lou Gehrig story that suggests there was a little reinventing of history at some point since Pipp was supplanted at first base, click here.
