Of Horses and Buggies, Dartmouth and Harvard

From a column by Bill Reynolds in the Providence Journal:

OK, here's the story:

It's the late 19th century, and a bunch of guys from Dartmouth College are on their way by horse and buggy to Massachusetts to play a bunch of guys from Harvard in this new game called football.

And there on the side of the road is a big, strapping guy pushing a wheelbarrow.

"Hey," says one of the Dartmouth players. "Want to come play football for us?"

"Sure," says the guy, setting down the wheelbarrow.

The first recruiting violation.

The point is, rules have been bent in college sports almost since the beginning of time.
The column is about the Reggie Bush affair, but I thought Dartmouth folks would appreciate Bill's "lede." Find the column here.
