As expected, Cornell offensive lineman Kevin Boothe was the lone Ivy Leaguer selected in the NFL draft yesterday. (See Ithaca Journal story) Boothe, whose stock had been falling in recent weeks, went to the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round. He was the 176th player chosen. (See Cornell Sun story)... Princeton corner Jay McCariens signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals and teammate Jon Dekker, the All-Ivy tight end, agreed to a free agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. (See Princeton story) Tight end, by the way, is becoming a signature position in the Ivies. Dekker is at least the fourth Ivy tight end in three years to sign with an NFL team following Dartmouth's Casey Cramer, Yale's Nate Lawrie (both drafted by the Bucs) and Columbia's Wade Fletcher, who signed with the Giants last year. ... Yale quarterback Jeff Mroz, who had been keeping this journal, has signed with the Dallas Cowboys (See note at this story's end) Mroz told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: ""I thought maybe my only shot (of getting drafted) was Dallas or Philadelphia, but neither drafted a quarterback. It works out well with Dallas. I'm the only quarterback going in." ... No word on Brown tailback Nick Hartigan's pro future yet.
A New York Daily News story on the New York Giants yesterday had a short note reiterating that the team will likely be signing a veteran quarterback and that the team is keeping an eye on Jay Fiedler's rehabilitation. ... Former Dartmouth coach John Lyons' defense played well again, but it wasn't enough to keep the Cologne Centurions from suffering a 17-10 loss to the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe action.
