Wednesday Odds & Ends

Look for a report on today's Dartmouth practice here tonight. ... Incoming tight end Carroll Papajohn gets a brief mention in this story. ... The feeling here is that Jay Fiedler and the New York Giants are eventually going to hook up, but it's not going to happen quite yet according to this note in the Daily News quoting Jay's agent. ... I'm intrigued by the NCAA approving the Gridiron Classic, a I-AA postseason game between the top teams in the Northeast Conference and the Pioneer Football League that are not invited to the I-AA playoffs. Some of us used to speculate about how much fun it would be to pit the Ivy champ against the Patriot League champ (if neither league were going to the playoffs), but we never figured the NCAA would give the OK, let alone the Ivy League. Looks as if half of that problem wouldn't be a problem at all. I doubt the Ivies would ever approve the game but it's a moot point because the PL champ has bigger fish to fry in the I-AA playoffs. As an aside, several alums have suggested a postseason all-star football game featuring a team made up of players from schools in Ivy baseball's Rolfe Division facing players from schools in baseball's Gehrig Division. It's an interesting thought but I'd prefer the push for the I-AA playoffs continue instead. If the Ivies were to give the OK to such an all-star game (and that's a big if) it would simply give the league one more reason why there's no need to go on to the playoffs.
