First-game opponent Colgate reports to camp today. The Raiders will have their first practice session tomorrow afternoon as they prepare for their Sept. 2 opener at UMass, which like Dartmouth, has installed a new FieldTurf surface this summer. ... This is kind of fun. Know someone who played football at Dartmouth? Or someone who says he played football at Dartmouth? The list of all-time football letterwinners at the college has been posted here.
The annual New Hampshire-Vermont Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl game annually held at Dartmouth's Memorial Field was played yesterday at Plymouth State University. The game was moved for one year because of construction in Hanover. The noontime parade, complete with enormous Shriners overflowing tiny cars and motorcycles, usually attracts a crowd of about 10,000 to Hanover's Main Street. Estimates are that 2,500-3,000 turned out for the parade at Plymouth. The game drew an estimated 7,500, which is about what it has been pulling in at Memorial Field lately. For what it's worth, New Hampshire took a 24-7 win to raise its series mark to 38-13-2. The offensive star of the game was a tailback headed to UNH. Dartmouth did not have a player in the game.
One final note: Several reports, including one by our local paper, referred to the Shrine Game being moved because Dartmouth's Memorial Stadium was being renovated. The incorrect stadium reference is a little like Dartmouth being referred to as a university. I wonder if coach Buddy Teevens might seek a name change for the venue after construction work has been completed.
