Someone got up early at the Daily Dartmouth today. (Usually the D is the last paper to be posted to the web.) Here's what The Dartmouth has to say about tomorrow's game against Yale: "... (T)he Big Green will be looking for its first victory against a team that is going through some rough times off the field." That is in reference to the arrest of several members of the football team. (Read more about that incident in the Princetonian and the Daily Pennsylvanian) ...
Yale linebacker Bobby Abare told the Yale Daily that controlling Dartmouth quarterback Mike Fritz will be a key: "We just need to play our game defensively and not let the quarterback scramble and make plays for himself." ... The Columbia Specator Ivy League roundup has this take on Yale-Dartmouth: "... (W)hile the upset is certainly not likely, a performance similar to last weekend's might raise a few eyebrows around the league."
The Columbia Spectator tell it like it is regarding The Lions' game tomorrow against Iona: "When Bob Shoop set his schedule for this season, he must have had an inkling he'd be fighting to save his job-he was just a year too late." And this: "Iona plays at a lower level than the Ivy opponents that Columbia will face for the rest of the season. Their 1-4 record hasn't come against difficult teams ... ." Columbia's three non-league opponents so far: Fordham (1-3), Georgetown (1-4) and Iona (1-4).
Just stumbled across this one yesterday: The Dartmouth Review offers up a season preview written by Dartmouth defensive tackle Max Copello. It concludes this way: "Dartmouth football is entering a new era. Losing seasons will no longer be tolerated. Buddy Teevens has been a part of three Ivy championships, one as a player and two at the helm as a head coach. He knows what it takes to win and will ultimately lead Dartmouth to its unprecedented eighteenth Ivy Championship."
One that will get away: The Eagle Tribune out of North Andover, Mass., has a story about Chris Shannon, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound brother of Dartmouth center Mike Shannon. A high school senior, Chris has already had scholarship offers from Maryland and Duke. Although he's been a regular visitor to Dartmouth practices the past few years, Chris is not looking at the Ivy League according to the story.
There are stories about the various Ivy matchups this weekend all over the web but if you really want to waste time, check out this page of "goofs" in the movie Friday Night Lights. I have no idea what link it was that landed me on the goof page, only that it happened while I was digging through stuff for the blog. Go figure.
And for those of you asking, the Hanover 7th/8th football team continued unbeaten this week with a 35-0 win. A certain backup fullback/corner saw limited time and was once again disheartened. But he brightened after being asked to think ahead to next year and to project what upcoming sixth grader might play ahead of him. "None," he said. So it's make the best of this season and wait 'til next year. ... Meanwhile the Hanover High field hockey team improved to 6-2-3 with a 4-2 win. A certain freshman started the scoring off for the Marauders with her second goal of the year. ;-)
