I was the selector for the weekly New England Gold Helmet Award and chose Brown quarterback Joe DiGiacomo as the I-AA recipient after he completed 27-of-49 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns in the win at Brown. (I went with Western New England's Jordan Capitanio, who rushed for a career high 262 yards and three TD's, in Division III.) From the Providence Journal:
DiGiacomo is the Ivy League offensive player of the week and today will receive the New England Football Writers Gold Helmet Award in Boston. His performance at Penn was typical of his career. When he is on, he is All-Ivy good. When he is off, he looks like a rookie. After saying he couldn't look at the waiver wire for a new kicker, Penn coach Al Bagnoli did the next best thing. According to the Daily Pennsylvanian, he's promoting the kicker for the Sprint (nee lightweight) football team to give him a look.
The Columbia Spectator is joining the chorus asking for freshman M.A. Millicent Olawale to take over as quarterback for the Lions. The story includes this statement: "Columbia's freshmen class has been, without a doubt, one of the best of any Ivy team this year." Please check back in 2-3 years to find out if it's true.
