A couple of seniors who gave Dartmouth fits over the past few years will be playing in the 82nd annual East-West Shrine Game in Houston on Jan. 20 and then heading off to the NFL Combine in the middle of February.
Brown linebacker Zak DeOssie and UNH wide receiver David Ball both relinquished their spots for the Jan. 14 Hula Bowl in favor of playing in the East-West game, which is thought to be a better showcase for NFL scouts. (It better be a showcase because I'd sure rather play in Honolulu than in Houston ;-). Read about DeOssie's decision on the Brown web site. The Manchester Union Leader has a good story about Ball's decision, his deliberations in choosing an agent and about his NFL potential.
Shrine Game history lesson: Dartmouth quarterback Jay Fiedler completed 8-of-13 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown to share the offensive player of the game honors with Jeff Garcia in the 1994 contest.
If you are watching the Rose Bowl today, look for fifth-year Michigan senior Alijah Bradley. The 5-foot-6, 171-pound back hasn't had the chance to carry the ball much in his career (23 rushes for 86 yards) but has been a special teams mainstay. This story notes that the only school to actively pursue the product of the powerhouse De La Salle program was ... Brown.
We're having an ice storm up here on the mountain and the entire east side of our house is coated in a dimpled quarter-inch of the stuff. The trees are reaching for the ground under the weight of so much ice. I have this fear that of all days, today will be the day when either the electricity goes out (which happens a lot up here) or the satellite dish takes a powder. I'm charging batteries right now against the chance I'll be listening to the Rose Bowl.
Enjoy the day, watch a lot of football and don't nosh too much.
