The Calgary Sun has a nice piece about Anthony Gargiulo's first game with the CFL's Stampeders. From the story:
The Calgary Stampeders rookie defensive end had a monster first game in Red and White, recording a sack, tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery as the Stampeders beat the Ticats 37-9.I spoke with Anthony from Calgary last night and hope to have a few thoughts to add later today.
Dartmouth continues to rub elbows with the big guys in the recruiting wars. The latest name to pop up is Alabama prep linebacker/tight end LaManski Ware. He told Scout.com:
“I’m hearing from Auburn, Vanderbilt, Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss the most. Minnesota, UAB, Alabama, Yale and Dartmouth are also recruiting me.”There's an interesting 20 Questions feature with Cubs infielder Mark DeRosa, the veteran big league infielder who gave up the starting quarterback role at Penn to sign a baseball contract after his junior year, here. DeRosa was picked in the seventh round of baseball's 1996 draft.
Remember Gordon Gee, the former Brown president who bolted for Vanderbilt? Prior to Brown he was at Ohio State and given Vandy's recent successes in the athletic arena, the Buckeyes would like nothing better than to bring him back according to this story.
Does Harvard mean business with the hiring of former Michigan coach Tommy Amaker as men's basketball coach? You be the judge. There are reports -- everywhere -- that Cem Dinc, a 6-foot-10, 250-pound center who spent one season at Indiana and then applied for the NBA Draft, is headed to Cambridge. Amaker hasn't confirmed that Dinc has been admitted, but did confirm he applied. Here's the kicker: Dinc will come to Harvard as a junior college transfer. Dinc didn't come close to living up to advance billing at Indiana and transferred after barely playing his freshman year with the Hoosier to Marshalltown Community College in Iowa. Dinc has been a member of the Turkish National Team and insiders tell me he should be a force in the Ivies.
And finally, Dartmouth football coach Buddy Teevens is joined in the effort to raise money for Dartmouth's Norris Cotton Cancer Center via The Prouty Ride by Keith Van Winkle, who coached gymnastics at Dartmouth and has long been a regular around the gym. Keith is battling cancer with the same drive and determination he put into becoming a tremendous world class age-group diver. His Van Winkle Dream Team has so far raised $20,055.57 for the Prouty, already surpassing its $20,000 goal. Knowing Keith, it doesn't surprise me. For what it's worth -- and that's a lot -- Keith is one of the nicest people I've ever known. If you know Keith and would like to contribute to the Prouty in his name, or in Buddy Teevens' name, click here. The rest is easy.
