New Stands Taking Shape

A worker puts primer on the new section of stands in front of Leverone Field House on Monday. (Click on photos to supersize.)
The new stands (light green) run from the 15-yard line to the back of the end zone. The end of the stands is being wrapped in brick that matches Floren Varsity House.

They've been wearing T-shirts around Burlington, Vt., for years bearing the cute slogan: UVM Football. Undefeated since 1974.

Is football returning to the University of Vermont? Sort of, according to this story in the Rutland Herald. The scoop is that a student is planning to start club football at the school this fall.

For what it's worth, there are just two states in the union without football at their state university: Vermont and Alaska. There has been an occasional groundswell trying to get the Catamounts back on the gridiron but it has never really gone anywhere. Too bad.

Interestingly, some of the best players at New Hampshire over the past handful of years have come from Vermont, including a wide receiver by the name of David Ball.

For what it's worth, Dartmouth first played UVM in 1886. The Big Green dominated the series with 24 wins, one loss and three ties. ...

Jay Fiedler's group is bringing pro basketball to eastern Kentucky. The story has been out there for a while. Here's an update. From the story:
According to Jay Fiedler, "Pikeville is a small town with big city dreams and aspirations. You can tell from all the infrastructure development that significant growth is on the horizon."
Anthony Gargiulo's getting a little tired of the attention his alphabetizing trick is getting but word is spreading. Now a note has appeared in the Toronto Sun.

And finally ... The soon-to-be 8th grader "played up" yesterday on the Junior Babe Ruth baseball team that his sister plays on. It was kinda cool to look out there and see the soon-to-be sophomore in left field and her younger brother in right. ... The rising soph, by the way, has made a smooth transition from softball back to baseball and is having a blast.
