They say respect has to be earned and this morning's Ivy League roundup in several Ivy League school newspapers (and the Colgate paper) confirms it. ...
From the Harvard Crimson: "Expect the Raiders to “brush” aside the putrid Big Green, plunging Dartmouth into a season-long search for a W. ... Prediction: Colgate 17, Dartmouth 7."
From the Columbia Spectator: "A consistent contender for the Ivy League cellar for the last decade, it will be tough for the Big Green to move out of the bottom of the standings this season. ... Dartmouth will snatch an Ivy win or two over the course of the season, but anything more than two wins shouldn’t be expected." (This is part of an entire section of the Spec devoted to football. From the Daily Pennsylvanian: "Colgate is still looking for the magic of its 2003 national runner-up, and Dartmouth is still looking for the magic of its dynasties of the 1960s and 70s. Don't hold your breath on either."
From the end of the Colgate Maroon-News story about last week's UMass game: "Colgate will be expected to do the trampling next week as they battle a Dartmouth team they have manhandled in recent years, winning 13 out of the last 15 games in the rivalry."
Dartmouth's official game release is here. ... A reminder that the game is a fundraiser for United Way with $2 from each ticket going to the charity. (LINK) ... The Manchester Union Leader has a college wrapup that includes a capsule of the Dartmouth-Colgate game.
Kudos to the transfer from Duke who has organized a grassroots campaign to get more students involved in supporting athletics at Brown. Among other things, students who join the effort receive points for signing in to each targeted game they attend and receive sportswear and bonuses at the end of the year depending on their point totals. The Daily Herald has a story. ...
A quick note here informs that former All-America tight end Casey Cramer has returned to practice with the Tennessee Titans after missing last week's NFL opener with a knee issue.
That certain Hanover eighth grader's football team ran up a 46-0 halftime lead yesterday despite liberal substitution and went on to win 62-0 with the clock running in the second half. Most of the touchdowns came on one-play drives. Green Alert Take: Unfortunately, when another team needs to play younger kids "up" and older "down" simply to field a team -- and still has to borrow three players from the host team -- it's time to call off the season and spend the year practicing instead of playing. The visitors might, and that's might, have had three plays that gained yardage last night, the longest a three-yard pass to a Hanover player borrowed for the third quarter. This "game" was good for neither team and someone could have been hurt.
And finally, we got the LL Bean Christmas catalogue in the mail yesterday. Understand, I'm a big LL Bean fan. We buy a lot of stuff there and I've got what I think is a pretty funny story about one time I went to the Freeport, Maine, headquarters in the wee hours. But yikes, it's the middle of September! We'll probably get a dozen different Bean catalogues between now and December. Did we really need a Christmas catalogue before the leaves have changed?
