Three interesting (to me at least ;-) notes out of Colorado State University-Pueblo, which restoring a Division II football program.
First, Tom Miller has been hired as assistant head coach. (link) Miller, who spent 23 years on the staff at Air Force, was a Dartmouth assistant under Joe Yukica in the early '80s.
Second, the team nickname is the ThunderWolves. Hadn't heard that one before. I can see it now. The ThunderMoose.
And third, in a novel PR move, the school is having a contest -- open to the public -- to design the team's helmet logo and uniforms. There's a PDF on the team site (link) with outlines of a helmet and uniform to be drawn on. I would imagine they'll get some interesting responses. (I can think of a couple of Hanover school kids who would love to get in on this one. Hey, the winner can choose a cash prize or a small scholarship to the school. Maybe I will tell the kids about it. ...)
USA Today has crunched the numbers after the first week of the season to see what kind of impact the rules changes have had on games and the result is hardly earth-shattering. The number of plays is up and so is the length of games. (link) Plays went from 126 last year to 138 this year in Week One. The games took an average of 13 minutes longer, from 3:03 last year to 3:16 this year.
Today's Daily Pennsylvanian reports that three Quaker kickers are hurting. (link) The story says coach Al Bagnoli blames, "fatigue from overkicking." Given that Bagnoli's team lost four games by a total of eight points last year -- in large part because of kicking woes -- it's hardly a surprise that there are some tired legs in Philly during this camp.
Seven teams in this week's SME Top 25 ranking (link) lost last week to open the season 0-1. But somehow Princeton, which didn't play, lost its spot in the Top 25. Very strange.
Notes are up for Week One opponent Colgate's game Saturday against No. 2 UMass at Hamilton, N.Y. (link) New Hampshire's notes have been posted for its opener at James Madison. (link)
And finally, there's a story in the Daily Pennsylvanian about a 15-year-old girl in Penn's freshman class. (link) She's referred to as "the youngest black female ever to be admitted to an Ivy League institution."
While that story out of Philadelphia is worth reading, getting to read it was tricky. The Daily P site has one of those revolving "lead story" thingies on its front page. I had to hover my mouse in the right place and click quickly when the story I wanted was on the screen. Kind of like that carnival game where you try to hit the pop-up weasel with the sledgehammer. Or when one of those "Win a Free iPod" or some other silliness shows up on the top of a page you Googled and all you have to do is click on a moving ad. I've never done it but the guess here is the only thing you are going to win is Spam.
Note to web folks: Just because you have the technology to rotate that lead story doesn't make it a good idea.
