Columbia athletics is receiving a $5 million gift from Robert Kraft, a former Lion scrub (not cub) and owner of the New England Patriots according to the New York Times. ...
Here's a shocker: USA Today is reporting, "Survey of faculty says athletics outweighs academics." From the story:
Half of faculty members at some schools with some of the nation's top sports programs think decisions on intercollegiate athletics are driven at least moderately by "priorities of an entertainment industry" and not in line with the university's academic mission, according to a new survey.Do you think Syracuse misses Jake Crouthamel and his decision making? Click this link to check out the "crowd" at the Carrier Dome with 8:42 left in the game against West Virginia. (You can rotate the picture to see all the way around.)
By the way, I meant to post this link to pictures of Crouthamel when I had the piece with him last week.
And for those of you wondering, that certain Hanover High field hockey player's team dropped a 2-0 decision to rival Lebanon yesterday in what was apparently a well-played game. Now it's on to the state tournament. ... The Hanover High girls cross country team, by the way, is ranked first in the Northeast, 12th in the country and one spot ahead of Hinsdale Central (for all you Hinsdale folks out there;). The sophomore is getting a lot of encouragement from the members of the team who will return next year to give XC a shot. She had a terrific indoor track season as a distance runner last year and is running in a 5-miler this Sunday. ... That certain 8th grader is hobbling around for the second day in a row with his first real football injury. He took a shot on one leg and is having a hard time bending the knee. Golf may be looking better and better.
