Even Nelson’s first appearance in the shot put circle at the Lovett School in Atlanta came as a surprise. Football and wrestling were his main sports in high school, and he only took up track and field after being cut from the baseball team — as he puts it, “I can swing a bat, I just couldn’t hit a ball.”For Nelson's NBC bio - which mentions that his sister Kate went to Dartmouth to play soccer - click here.
He did well enough to draw looks for each sport from major colleges, but settled on the Ivy League — specifically Dartmouth College, which allowed him to play football and continue his shot put career.
Whether this blogger has it right or not is open to debate, but clearly Casey Cramer is in a battle for his roster spot with the Tennessee Titans. The blogger writes:
Of all the players listed here, Cramer will have the toughest time remaining on the Titans this year. He’s no better than fifth on the depth chart at tight end and I’ll be very surprised if he’s still with us in September. For an overview of three of the toughest teams on Dartmouth's schedule, check out what Phil Steele's football says in these full-page PDFs about:
They played tackle football on Dartmouth's Memorial Field yesterday as the top graduated seniors from New Hampshire played Vermont in the 55th annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. The surprise wasn't that the Granite Staters won (they have a commanding 40-13-2 lead in the series) but the margin of the victory. Leading just 7-0 at the half, New Hampshire exploded over the final two quarters to post a 42-0 win. That's the most lopsided score in the long history of the game. ... There were no future Dartmouth players in the game but Brown-bound tailback Alex Theodosi (click and scroll down for Brown bio) from Londonderry ran 11 times for 58 yards for New Hampshire. ... New Hampshire co-captain Reed Spiller (click for Yale bio) a lineman from Portsmouth, is also headed to the Ivies.
