ESPN has a story about Russell Wilson, a quarterback/baseball player at North Carolina State who happens to be the son of former Dartmouth player Harry Wilson '77. It would be interesting to pull together an all-star team of sons of former Big Green players, because there are a lot of them out there, including two Wilsons. From the story:
It wasn't long until everyone at Richmond's Collegiate School knew who Russell was, and the day is fast approaching when Russell Wilson becomes a household name in ACC country. As an infielder on the baseball team and quarterback on the football team entering his second year at NC State, Russell is merely the latest two-sport college athlete to come out of the Wilson family.A Calgary Herald columnist had some nice thoughts after Anthony Gargiulo's recent release by the Calgary Stampeders. He wrote:
His grandfather, Harrison B. Wilson Jr., split time between football and basketball at Kentucky State, and his father, Harrison III, doubled as a baseball and football player at Dartmouth. More recently, his brother Harry completed an accomplished career at the University of Richmond as a wide receiver/punt returner for the Spiders' football team and an outfielder on the baseball team.
Strictly speaking, of course, we're not supposed to cheer for players. But it was hard not to be in Gargiulo's corner as he tried to come back from having his leg shattered by a questionable — most say dirty — block last November by B.C. Lions offensive lineman Jason Jimenez. ...There's a new poll over there in the left column. These things are always hard to weigh in on because you don't know whether people are voting what they think will happen or what they want to happen. I suspect it's a little of both. A final look at how the last poll turned out:
Too bad. Good story, great quote, and a good guy on top of all that.
And finally, it would be fine with all of us around here if the rain would please stop. I believe I read that June and July were the rainiest on record in these parts and August has been worse so far. Doors in the house are swelling from the humidity and tomatoes out in the garden are bursting from all the moisture. Enough is enough.
