Non-League Woes

Although Dartmouth's non-league schedule has been a subject of discussion ad nauseum, I found myself wondering recently how the Big Green has fared out-of-conference compared to how the rest of the league has fared since the last winning season in 1997. Here's what I found:

Non-conference records since 1998
1. Harvard 22-10
1. Yale 22-10
3. Brown 19-13
3. Penn 19-13
5. Cornell 16-16
6. Princeton 14-18
7. Columbia 12-20
8. Dartmouth 5-27
Dartmouth's Ivy League record over the same span: 18-59.

The Big Green's nonconference breakdown since 1998:
  • 3-6 vs. Holy Cross
  • 1-1 vs. Lafayette
  • 1-9 vs. Colgate
  • 0-1 vs. Lehigh
  • 0-1 vs. Maine
  • 0-9 vs. UNH
Thoughts?

If you look at the coaching changes posting on the Sports Network page, it will show 26 openings at the Division I level with 25 of them filled. The only blank is next to Yale. While the list hasn't been updated to show the Cal Poly opening created when Rich Ellerson left for Army, it has to be a little alarming for the folks down in New Haven.

And finally, Week Three of the New Hampshire indoor track season finds that certain Hanover High junior running the 1,000 today as she tries to qualify for states in a third event in three tries. That certain freshman, meanwhile, was sledding in the back yard after yesterday's practice and decided it would be fun to create and go off a jump. He ended up spending a good part of the evening with ice on a leg injury and is concerned that he may not be able to compete today. Call it a lesson learned the hard way.
