Maybe his first miracle as President will be a winning football season next year, or an Ivy League championship in men’s basketball. He certainly has an opportunity to make his mark early with a solid Athletic Director hire next year. Make a great choice there, and perhaps he can start turning things around.A winning football season next year a miracle? Ouch.
The days of Ivy League football players appearing on the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) College Football Hall of Fame ballot are dwindling. Two show up this year: Former Yale running back Dick Jauron and former Harvard tight end Pat McInally. Here's what the official bios on the ballot say about the pair:
Dick Jauron, Yale-Running Back-Named First Team All-America in 1972...A three-time First Team All- Conference selection, he received the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as the Ivy League's Player of the Year...Holds Yale's career rushing record with 2,947 yards. (Note: That record was broken by Mike McLeod.)As always, there is a field of high-profile names on the ballot. Among the 76 are Tim Brown, Notre Dame, Randall Cunningham, UNLV, Kirk Gibson, Michigan State, Desmond Howard, Michigan, Art Mont, Syracuse, Deion Sanders, FSU, Sterling Sharpe, SC, Lawrence Taylor, UNC, Pat Tillman, Arizona State, Gino Torretta, Miami.
Pat McInally, Harvard-Tight End-Named First Team All- America in 1974...Finished second in the nation in pass receptions in 1973...Two-time First Team All-Ivy League pick (1973-74)...Received 1974 New England Player of the Year and First Team All-East honors.
In case you were wondering, Dartmouth has had eight players inducted into the Hall, the latest being Reggie Williams '76. The others are guard Clarence Spears '17, tackle Ed Healey '18, halfback Swede Oberlander '26, back Myles Lane '28, quarterback Bill (Air Mail) Morton '32, halfback Bob MacLeod '39 and rover Murry Bowden '71.
Also in the Hall from Dartmouth are Edward Hall '92 (that's 1892 ;-), former chairman of the Football Rules Committee, coach Frank Cavanaugh '99 (1899), coach Tuss McLaughry, coach Earl Blaik and coach Bob Blackman.
The news out of Florida is not good regarding the two NFL players and their friend who are missing after rough seas capsized their fishing boat. Turns out new Yale coach Tom Williams recruited and coached Marquis Cooper, one of the missing players. The New Haven Register has the story.
