'An Explosive First Step'

And in other news (yes there's news beyond Dartmouth naming a president) the Salem News has a story on incoming recruit Teddy Reed, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound defensive end from Boxford, Mass. A couple of excerpts, the first a quote from Deerfield Academy coach Mike Silipo:
"Teddy is big and fast and he can rush the passer at the next level. He's got an explosive first step. He needs to work on his hands and put on some weight, but that will come with time. But he already has flat-out straight ahead speed, and you can't coach that stuff."
and ...
... Reed was also blown away by Dartmouth's upgraded facilities.

"It's been an amazing place to visit," he said. "Everyone who is recruited by Dartmouth is wowed by the facilities. You go up there and you feel like you're going to Michigan."
Reed's grandfather, Edward Rockwell, was a Dartmouth '53.

I was told early last week that offensive line coach Cyril Brockmeier was moving on, but because the information was "off the record," I haven't posted anything before. After receiving a handful of emails sharing the news I guess the word is out.

By now you've probably read thousands of words about the new Dartmouth president. For something different, check out the story in the Brown Daily Herald (he transferred to Brown as a sophomore) and the Harvard Crimson (he earned his medical degree and his doctorate at Harvard and heads the Harvard Medical School's Department of Global Health and Social Medicine). From the Crimson story:
...(A)s a former high school quarterback in Iowa, Kim cited Dartmouth’s wide range of extracurricular activities and strong involvement in sports as key to producing a productive work setting.
A note on yesterday's blog: I originally linked to a story on the Internet that incorrectly identified Dartmouth's next president. Fortunately, I got a call shortly thereafter informing me that the site had it wrong. Thanks for the help.

The San Francisco Business Times is reporting that a "front-runner among candidates being considered to run the Pacific 10 Conference," is Dartmouth grad Sandy Alderson '69, the CEO of the San Diego Padres. For a Dartmouth Life Q&A with Alderson, click here.

And finally, yesterday was the busiest day on the blog since National Signing Day. ;-)
