It didn't feel like a blowout. The heavily favored University of New Hampshire football team led Dartmouth by just six points midway through the third quarter. The Concord Monitor writes:
But behind backup quarterback Kevin Decker, who replaced injured starter R.J. Toman, and an opportunistic defense that forced five turnovers, the Wildcats turned on the afterburners and sped away for a 44-14 win Saturday afternoon at Cowell Stadium.
After losing to the University of New Hampshire by an average of 29.8 points in its last five meetings with the Wildcats, it's easy to see why Dartmouth has postponed the series until 2014. But yesterday's Granite Bowl was not the usual start-to-finish laugher. The Manchester Union Leader story is under the headline, "UNH wins tougher-than-it-looks Granite Bowl." Elsewhere in games featuring Dartmouth opponents ...
Cornell 14, Yale 12
The Skinny: In a near mathematical impossibility, Cornell had three – count 'em three – first downs and won as ballyhooed Nebraska transfer Patrick Witt of Yale completed 21-of-54 passes for 180 yards with three interceptions. The Big Red got an interception return for a touchdown and an 81-yard scoring pass from Stephen Liuzza to Bryan Walters.
Lafayette 20, Penn 17, OT
The Quakers scrambled back from a 17-0 deficit to force overtime. Penn had structured much of its attack this fall around the running style of Keiffer Garton, but he split time with Kyle Olson in the first half and watched as Olson led the second-half comeback according to a story on the Penn athletics web site. From the Philly.com story: ""We just need to regroup and get healthy," said (coach Al) Bagnoli, whose battered, bruised Quakers are 0-2 heading into Saturday's Ivy League opener at Dartmouth.
Princeton 17, Lehigh 14
The Skinny: Princeton had six first downs and 163 yards ... and won. A 77-yard interception return and a 68-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tommy Wornham helped turn the trick.
Central Connecticut St. 22, Columbia 13
After winning their opener and going up 13-0 in this one, the Lions came tumbling back to earth as the Blue Devils scored 22 unanswered points. Columbia managed just 12 first downs as it was a woeful 1-for-9 in third-down conversions. Columbia blogger Jake Novak's take on the Lions' loss can be found here.
Colgate 20, Fordham 12
Running back Jordan McCord carried 41 times for 192 yards, quarterback Greg Sullivan passed for 189 and ran for 109 and Pat Simonds caught nine passes for 159 yards and a TD. Haven't we seen this before?
And from Friday ...
Harvard 24, Brown 21
Collier Winters passed for 223 yards and ran for 66 as Harvard survived a late push by Brown, which now has lost two games by a total of four points.
