Color the Super Bowl Brown

With the Indianapolis Colts defeating the New York Jets yesterday, there will be a former Brown player in the Super Bowl for the third year in a row. This year it will be tight end Colin Cloherty, who made the Colts as an undrafted free agent.

Last year it was former Brown wide receiver Sean Morey playing for the Arizona Cardinals against his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two years ago it was Zak DeOssie playing for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants against the New England Patriots. Former Brown receiver Chas Gessner was a practice player for the Patriots in their 2004 Super Borwl win over the Carolina Panthers.

In case you are wondering, former Dartmouth tight end Adam Young '00 was a member of the New York Giants' practice squad when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens in Tampa in Super Bowl XXXC in 2001. I wrote a story about him at the time in which he was quoted as saying fans often confused him with quarterback Kerry Collins.

Cornell AD Andy Noel said during a radio interview this weekend that he expects to name the Big Red's new head football coach this week.

Colate receiver Pat Simonds had two catches in the East-West Shrine game, although the more impressive of the two – a leaping grab where he essentially boxed out his defender – was negated by a penalty.

Those who think time has passed the wishbone offense by haven't watched Air Force, Navy and yes, even Army, the past few years. Now it appears as if you will be able to add another team with a military bent to the group: The Citadel. A Post and Courier story notes a quarterback recruit was told, "the Bulldogs will run a "Navy-style triple-option offense."

I may be partial to it, but I still find it puzzling why at least one struggling Ivy League team doesn't give the offense a shot. ...

And finally, that certain Hanover High senior cut two more seconds off her time while finishing second in a 20-runner field in the 1000 meters at UNH yesterday. After being slowed by a blood disorder during the fall she's knocking on the door of the 1000 time she ran last year, when finished second in the state championships. With two weeks to go until this year's states she's feeling pretty good about where she is right now.
