A Familar Name

Cassie Hodgson, who worked as a student-trainer for the Dartmouth football team and even passed the preseason conditioning test when her dad Mike was on the Big Green staff, has drilled two home runs while starting 18-of-23 games for the University of Maine softball team this spring.

With Ivy League admissions decisions being formalized on April 1 and deposits due by the end of April, there's always a bit of anxiety that a recruit may change his mind. Thinking about that I remembered that Dartmouth actually lost two recruits a year ago. One chose not to play football while the other, a Tennessee defensive back named Sam Thompson, chose to go to Carnegie-Mellon.

Out of curiosity, I checked the Carnegie-Mellon site to see how Thompson's season went. Turns out he had a pretty good year for the Division III Tartans, playing in all 10 games and finishing sixth on the team in tackles. He was named the University Athletic Association Defensive Athlete of the Week for making 15 stops in a loss to No. 9 Case Western Reserve. Find his Carnegie Mellon bio here.

Columbia is pioneering a little new ground with its spring football game on Friday night, April 23. The game is being sponsored by Rack & Soul, a soul food and wood-smoked barbecue restaurant. Find a story here.

Butler, a Dartmouth football opponent in 2012 and 2013 in place of Colgate, has released its schedule for the coming fall. The Bulldogs will open at Division III Albion, travel to Youngstown State and then play host to NAIA school Taylor University of Indiana in their first three games.

The Bulldogs finished 11-1 last year with their only loss a 36-7 decision at Jacksonville in their 10th game. They closed out their season with a 28-23 win over Central Connecticut, which had wins last fall over Columbia and Lehigh. The victory against Central Connecticut game in the 2009 Gridiron Classic drew only 1,577 to the Butler Bowl.
