Measuring Up Against the 'Bigs'

Dartmouth football's all-time record against FBS Conferences:
  • Mid-American 3-0 (1-0 vs. Buffalo, Miami, Temple)
  • Atlantic Coast 4-1 (2-1 vs BC, 1-0 vs Virginia, 1-0 vs Virginia Tech)
  • Big East 8-4-2 (6-3 vs. Syracuse, 1-0-1 vs. West Virginia, 1-0 vs Rutgers, 0-1 vs. Cincinnati)
  • Southeastern 2-1 (1-0 vs. Tennessee, 1-1 vs. Georgia)
  • Big Ten 2-3 (2-1 vs. Penn State, 0-1 vs. Michigan, 0-1 vs. Northwestern)
  • Pac-10 1-4 (0-4 vs. Stanford, 1-1 vs. Washington)
  • Independents 1-12-1 (1-6 vs. Army, 0-4-1 vs. Navy, 0-2 vs. Notre Dame)
Here's the Dartmouth record against FCS teams. (It's shocking to me that the Big Green has left the Ivy League to play games against teams from only three of the 13 conferences and "independents.")
  • Pioneer 2-0
  • Colonial 45-28-3
  • Patriot 55-63-5
In case you are curious, both of the Pioneer wins came over Davidson (1987, 1988)

Yesterday's mail brought a packet from Colgate featuring a gorgeous color calendar with the photograph for October featuring a Colgate-Dartmouth football game. The picture from the 2008 game in Hamilton shows safety Peter Pidermann and defensive end Malcolm Freberg closing in on Colgate quarterback Greg Sullivan. (If you are a Colgate person, it might show Sullivan pulling away, but since I don't remember the play, I'll go with the two closing in on him ;-)

A happy 16th birthday to that certain Hanover High sophomore, who will be headed out to baseball practice in a few minutes despite the 18-degree temperature. (They will probably be practicing indoors.) He's not happy to have to spend most of the rest of the day working on homework but rest-assured, he's absolutely thrilled with the reason – a very, very special trip to Boston tomorrow.

That certain Hanover senior had one of those days that you never forget yesterday, hearing from four colleges and being accepted by all of them. The admissions director for perhaps the most selective of the schools jotted a note to her referencing the essay she wrote about how beneficial it was to play on a boys baseball team right into high school as well as the active role she has played in the school community. The personal touch of the note did not go unnoticed.
