Potpourri Saturday

No Dartmouth football for you today but a few notes of interest from here and there ...

The Big Green men's ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Quinnipiac last night in the ECAC playoffs. (link) It's a best two-of-three series with the second game slated for tonight.

The Dartmouth baseball team, by the way, kicks off play in Virginia today with games against Wright State and top-ranked Virginia. (link to notes) The defending Ivy League champions lost some important field players but return their entire pitching staff.

Following up on last week's post about James Madison University's sparkling new football stadium that figures to be a showcase at the FCS level, another one is under construction at Jacksonville State. Check out the artist's rendition renderings and construction photos here.

Dartmouth's new home grandstand and press box were slated to be done last fall, but the economic downturn resulted in that project being put on indefinite hold. (link) While it will probably be some time before the "west stands" are replaced more signs of economic improvement in the Ivy League landscape are showing up. First it was Yale (BGA link) and now it is Penn is reporting progress on rebuilding its endowment according to the Daily Pennsylvanian. From the story:
The University endowment has shown a “strong rebound” from last year, but Penn is still faced with serious economic realities, according to a statement from Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli.

The Associated Investments Fund, which constitutes the majority of Penn's endowment investments, has returned 13.7 percent as of December 31, 2009 — the close of the second quarter in fiscal year 2010. This is “ahead of the benchmark,” according to Carnaroli.
Speaking of building projects, the new Six South Street hotel in Hanover is on its way. Check out the web page for the "boutique" lodging here.

Following up on a couple of earlier BGA notes, the Dartmouth Idol competition was held Friday night and while I don't know how football's Michael Tree fared, there was a surprise guest as reported on Dartblog. From the posting:
... (A) Jackson-suited figure came upon the stage. His voice was full and low, and dressed in a fedora, leather jacket, loafers with white socks, and a single glove, he glided forward in a crouch — his face hidden. He moved well, and many in the crowd wondered who he was ...
OK, if you got this far without clicking on that Dartblog link, you are hereby forbidden to read any further until you do. (I'm not giving away the surprise so click here.) ... All I can say is I hope they shot some video and I'm pretty sure they did.

Earlier this week BGA had a link about the indoor mile world record being set at Dartmouth in 1938. For a look at the how and why, check out this wonderful old Associated Press story.

And finally, as long as we are on the subject of track, that certain Hanover High senior was the top New Hampshire finisher last night in the 1,000 meters at the New England Championships in Boston, placing 13th overall. She came within 16/100ths of a second of her personal record. While she obviously would have liked to set a new PR, after everything she went through last fall when a blood disorder sabotaged both her cross country season and the start of the indoor track campaign, she's confident that she's finally back to where she was before she got sick and is looking forward to building from there in college track. (Her race last night was 10 seconds faster than the first time she ran the distance in December.) For a picture of that certain senior running to a third place in the state championships several weeks ago, click here.
