Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day, moms! Sorry for the delay but I was doing the breakfast in bed thing this morning ;-)

Woke up to a little bit of snow on our deck and the roof. It didn't stick on the ground but yikes. It's May 9.

Talking with kicker Foley Schmidt on Friday I asked about his rooming at Dartmouth with Craig Fitzgerald, an Air Force veteran who a newspaper column earlier in the week reported, "had been shot twice while leading an elite U.S. Air Force team during the war in Afghanistan." Fitzgerald came to Dartmouth after completing an Appalachian Trail hike that raised $150,000 for organizations that help wounded veterans.

Anyway, Foley had all good things to say about his roommate in Beta Alpha Omega and as one thing led to another he ended up telling me a little about Project Right Choice, the organization Fitzgerald co-founded last fall. Fitzgerald is the president of the organization and Schmidt is an officer. From its website:
Project Right Choice is a student-run, community service oriented organization with the primary goal of raising funds and awareness for worthwhile causes, while simultaneously providing practical experience for the moral and ethical leaders of tomorrow.
Last night Project Right Choice held a Cinco de Mayo Extravanaza at a local restaurant to raise money as part of its, "Project 2010: To assist severely injured service members and their families by supporting Fisher House Foundation."

When I clicked on the Our Volunteers link I found bios of Project Right Choice officers Fitzgerald, Schmidt, baseball pitcher Robert Young and catcher Brandon Parks as well as Chris Jenny, whose baseball career was cut short by injury. The list of members of the organization includes a number of athletes including past and present football players Tony Pastoors, Carter Scott, Shane Peterlin, Tim Vanderet and Bruno Vetter.

Another nomination for a Dartmouth nickname to replace (or work in conjunction with Big Green): The TrailBlazers. Think about it. First college outing club in the United States. The Appalachian Trail goes right through campus. Freshman trip.

The Dartmouth TrailBlazers, AKA the Dartmouth Blazers. Works for me.

Kudos to the Dartmouth baseball team, which rebounded from a disappointing, 13-2, loss in the first game of yesterday's Ivy League Championship Series doubleheader at Columbia to gut out a 15-10 win in the nightcap. Read a recap of a wild and windy day in the Big Apple here.

The rubber game to decide the Ivy League champion and which team will advance to the NCAA's will be played today with the first pitch at 1 p.m. You can watch it FREE by scrolling down this page and clicking on the appropriate icon.

Just a nitpick, but I get annoyed by announcers who say, "Derek Jeter had five RBI," instead of "five RBIs," with the "s." It just sounds so affected. RBIs may technically be incorrect, but it is popular usage, so deal with it.
