From the Miami Herald:
It was a steamy, 92-degree day that probably left the Dartmouth players wondering if they had come from another planet in New Hampshire. So hot that Texas A&M pitcher Barret Loux said his hands were oozing sweat, and he had trouble gripping the ball. The official Dartmouth report includes the following mention of highlights by a couple of Big Green players:
Dazed by the sun and UM's bats, Dartmouth allowed 11 runs in the first four innings, including a home run by Scott Lawson that hit the second level of the parking garage beyond right field and another by Chris Pelaez that flew over the right-field fence and bounced past an ambulance.
As afternoon wore into evening following a 68-minute lightning delay, Dartmouth settled down and UM got careless, but the Hurricanes held on for a 12-8 victory.
Junior outfielder Sam Bean had a career-high four hits in the game, and sophomore shortstop Joe Sclafani smashed a pair of home runs for Dartmouth (26-18). It was his first multi-homer game ever, dating back to youth baseball.Selected quotes from the postgame press conference can be found here.
The Big Green will try to stave off elimination today when it plays Florida International at noon. FIU fell to Texas A&M yesterday, 17-3. The game is slated for ESPNU and there figures to be a lot of media attention as FIU's Garrett Wittels tries to stretch his hit streak to 56 games.

Dartmouth opened the USA 7's Rugby Collegiate Championship yesterday with a 19-5 win over Notre Dame, and no, we're not talking about Notre Dame College, the New Hampshire school that closed in 2002. The Big Green is slated to play Harvard this morning and return to action on NBC TV today at 5 eastern when it takes on Cal.Thanks to a friend who knows this stuff, a little background on the tournament:
There are 16 teams competing. There is pool play on Friday and Saturday. 4 pools of 4 and they play a round robin. The top two (eight teams total) from each pool advance to the championship bracket on Sunday. There is also a losers bracket. The quarters, semis, and finals in both brackets are Sunday. Dartmouth's pool includes Notre Dame, Harvard, and Cal.The tourney website is here. NBC's Rugby 7's website is here. Former Dartmouth safety Peter Pidermann is on the Big Green team. (link)
The Championship is being promoted by NBC because rugby 7s is going to be played in the 2016 Olympics and they want to start developing an audience.
The games between 2 and 4 p.m. (today) are on Universal. The games between 4 and 6 p.m. today are on NBC. The Dartmouth-Cal game is at 5.
On Sunday, the games are on Universal between 2 and 4, and NBC at 4.
Cal is the current national champion in 15s. They have won 25 championships (out of about 30 that have been played) in 15s.

There will be a lot of reflections about John Wooden in coming days and many will talk about his Pyramid of Success. I found myself thinking this morning about his instructions on how to put on a pair of socks.*
Interestingly, on the same day our local paper had a story about Wooden dying at age 99, it had a story (with photo) of iconic Dartmouth graduate C. Everett Koop's marriage at age 93. For an earlier story about his nuptials, click here. The former surgeon general, by the way, used to own a farmhouse right down the road from us that we still call, "the Koop house." That Certain Hanover High Sophomore and his mom report that they spotted a moose in "the Koop house" field just now.
