Bay Named Preseason All-America

Dartmouth defensive end Charles Bay has been named a first-team preseason All-America by the FCS Senior Scout Bowl committee. Players on the all-senior team selected at the end of the season will have the chance to play in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl at the Joseph St. Lawrence Sports Complex Stadium (photo) in Ramapo, N.Y., on Dec. 11. The game will be presented by the Collegiate Development Football League.

Bay had 49 tackles and led Dartmouth with three sacks last fall. He's joined by three Big Green opponents on the Senior Scout Bowl first team (with a total of eight 2010 Dartmouth opponents being honored). Those named:

Following up on the announcement of Harry Sheehy as Dartmouth's new director of athletics, the Berkshire Eagle reports he received a five-year contract. The Eagle writes ...
This all came about very quickly. Sheehy said he was nominated for the position less than two weeks ago, met with Dartmouth officials in Boston and then interviewed again in Hanover, N.H.
Green Alert Take: That said, there were people around Dartmouth who had been mentioning Sheehy's name as far back as last summer.

A good Sheehy quote from the Eagle:
"It's not a matter of running away from Williams. It's a matter of running to Dartmouth."
And finally, this from the same story puts a different spin on the unusual circumstance of Dartmouth hiring a basketball coach before it hired an athletic director:
Coincidentally, Sheehy's newest coach at Dartmouth was almost a coach at Williams.

Paul Cormier, who was hired as the men's basketball coach at Dartmouth, had applied for Sheehy's job (as Williams basketball coach) when Dave Paulsen was hired in 2000 and applied again when Mike Maker was hired at Williams two years ago. Cormier, who is in his second stint at Dartmouth, was a finalist both times.

"He's a good coach," Sheehy said of Cormier. "I'm excited about him. He'll move that program forward."

The Northeast Conference held its media day yesterday and released its preseason poll. New Dartmouth Week Two opponent Sacred Heart was chosen eighth in the nine-team league. Here's how the poll went:
1. Central Conn. St. (4)
2. Robert Morris (3)
3. Albany (1)
4. Wagner (1)
5. Monmouth
6. Bryant
7. Duquesne
8. Sacred Heart
9. Saint Francis (PA)
The only Sacred Heart player chosen to the NEC preseason all-conference team was defensive lineman Justin Embler.

The NEC release and poll can be found here.

Here's what the release had to say about this fall's Sacred Heart team:
Head coach Paul Gorham has the conference’s most-experienced signal caller. Senior quarterback Dale Fink has thrown for over 2,000 yards in each of the past two years and is responsible for a program-record 67 touchdown passes since starting under center as a red-shirt freshman. Now that Fink's prime target Steve Tedesco has exhausted his football eligibility - the two hooked up on 32 scoring strikes the past three seasons – junior Rich Rossi will have a chance to be the team's top receiver. The success of the offense will also hinge upon the health and development of veteran running backs Marcel Archer and Garry Coles. The two offer an effective change of pace with Archer running with power and Coles displaying his elusiveness. The latter also has credentials as an all-NEC kick returner. The return of senior defensive end Bill O'Brien, who was sidelined by injury in 2009, should provide an immediate boost to the defense and strengthen SHU up front where it also boasts preseason all-NEC end Justin Embler.
More links after the NEC media day:
Craig Haley at The Sports Network covered the NEC press conference and writes:
This year, in the Northeast Conference specifically, the preseason buzz is threatening to become a rumble.

What is it, aside from the usual preseason excitement, that has the NEC football community rumbling?

Well, 2010 marks the first time in NEC history that the conference champion will be awarded an automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Green Alert Take: Do I have to hop up on my soap box yet again and remind everyone how patently unfair it is that every Ivy League sport gets to go to the postseason except one? To say that's the way it was when the Ivy League was founded is not a defense. It's an excuse, plain and simple.

Bucknell's first practice is set for 9 p.m. Saturday. Find a release here. Interesting time. Hopefully it will be cooler than during the day.

Green Alert Take: Here's a confession. I'm not real keen on that kind of schedule here because it would keep me up until the wee hours writing my postpractice story ;-).

Who knew that Dartmouth's Memorial Field and Wrigley Field have something in common. Check out this seriously offbeat Sports Illustrated story. No, it doesn't mention Memorial Field, but anyone who filled up on Cokes at a Dartmouth game and wandered under the stands at halftime should appreciate this story.

Green Alert Take: I must admit I'm partial to the, um, historic facilities at Yale Bowl.

And finally, speaking of Yale, remember that musical video That's Why I Chose Yale? (Green Alert link) It might have had a lot of Yalies shaking their heads and given alums at other schools something to laugh about, but at least it was well done. Georgia has produced something similar, but it isn't nearly as well done and is every bit as embarrassing. Amazingly, Georgia football coach Mark Richt makes a cameo toward the end. Thanks for the link to a pirated copy that was posted after the original was (wisely) made private. (By the way, that's 4:30 of my life I'll never get back.)

Summer in Hanover means the Farmer's Market on the Green on Wednesday afternoons.
