"Patient and Powerful"

On the eve of the announcement of the Ivy League Player of the Year (it will be made tomorrow in New York City) the Boston Globe leads its South Shore Notebook with a piece about tailback Nick Schwieger of Dartmouth, one of the four finalists. Not much new in the short blurb but a nice description of Schwieger from coach Buddy Teevens:
"Nick was a workhorse for us all season. He does a tremendous job of being patient and letting his blockers open up the holes. He is a very powerful runner, very difficult to tackle, and has that burst of speed to go with his power to get through the defense. We can give him the ball 25 to 30 times a game and he will just wear the other team down.’’
Granted, the piece is in the South Shore Notebook, but you'd think there would at least be a mention of the fact that Harvard's Gino Gordon is another of the finalists.

Speaking of the Player of the Year, in the Ivy League poll of who should win the award, Schwieger is hauling in 66 percent of the popular vote with Penn's Billy Ragone at 15 percent, Harvard's Gino Gordon at 11 and Princeton's Trey Peacock at 6 percent.

Playing with its backup quarterback, New Hampshire advanced in the FCS playoffs with a 45-20 win over Bethune-Cookman yesterday. Patriot League champion Lehigh hung tough with No. 3 Delaware for a half and racked up 26 first downs along with 391 yards of offense before falling, 42-20. UNH now visits the Blue Hens in the third round of the playoffs. Find the playoff bracket here.

Ivy League champion Penn, whose only loss was to quarterfinalist Villanova (which hammered Stephen F. Austin yesterday, 54-24) will be idle. Again.

The inimitable Holtsledge reports that potential recruiting target Kevin Macari of New Canaan HS in Connecticut had three touchdowns in the state semifinals, two through the air and one on a 38-yard fumble recovery. Read about Macari, who has "offers from Dartmouth, Georgetown and Rhode Island," here.
