A Missing Asterisk

If this website is accurate, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound middle linebacker from Ohio got an offer from Dartmouth at 7:09 a.m. last Monday and an offer from Notre Dame one minute later. You can see his highlight video and his offers here. There's a catch, though.

The offer was from the Notre Dame Falcons.

From a CantonRep.com story a little over a week ago:
GlenOak linebacker-tight end Luke Merrell may not have the NFL potential of some recruits, but he may be able to own a team one day. Merrell is making his choice among Ivy League schools Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth. GlenOak head coach Scott Garcia said Merrell was making one more visit and would make a decision next week. He eliminated Harvard.
Now that’s what you call a tough decision.

Wednesday is National Signing Day so the news will be fast and furious this week. I can't find 'em all – particularly from your local papers – so please keep those emails and links coming to BGA by clicking here.

What states have the most recruits? Texas has 343 players and Florida 299 on the MaxPreps list of top states for recruiting.

New Hampshire and Vermont have ... none. That's right. Four states in the country aren't represented on the MaxPreps list. New Hampshire and Vermont are joined by Rhode Island and Wyoming. Heck, even Maine has one, a kid who committed to Army.

That's not to say there aren't some good players in the Twin States. The local daily has a story about Cody Patch, the running back from nearby Lebanon who committed to Dartmouth last week. Find a link here.

Fightin' words in a Q&A with new Dartmouth Athletic Director Harry Sheehy showed up in our local daily today (link):
"I've told the coaches we're going to work on admissions and financial aid and your job is to step out and bloody Harvard, Yale and Princeton's noses a little bit, and if we get beat, we get beat. If you get knocked down, get up, because we won't get knocked down forever."
