Incoming running back recruit Ben Ticknor's last name shows up in the pages of early Dartmouth history. This electronic version of William Carroll Hill's 1902 edition of Dartmouth Traditions says George Ticknor, "father of the present system of modern language study in our colleges and universities, reorganizer of Harvard University and as much its preserver as was Webster the savior of Dartmouth College, was a graduate of Dartmouth College in the class of 1807." Wonder what his time was in the 40.*
A Lehigh Valley Live blogger about field hockey – of all things – considers the football scholarship quandary in the Patriot League. Among other things he says:The Ivy loves the Patriot Leaguers because its close and most of time they can beat the Patriot League. In addition their aid policies for all practical purposes trumps any scholarship program the Patriot League could construct. As long as that advantage exists the Ivies will continue to play the Patriot League because its convenient.

Having done the college tour thing a couple of years ago with a student-athlete who was very interested in Patriot League schools – and who would have had a hard time choosing between Ivies not named Dartmouth and her favorite PL schools – I have to admit it surprises me that the schools don't clash more on the recruiting trail. Check out the Lehigh Football Nation list of committed recruits around the Patriot League and count how many names have appeared on this blog as considering Dartmouth. While there undoubtedly were some, I'm not sure I noticed any.*
It's unclear where the undersized dynamo written up in the Aspen Times Weekly is heading, but he was interested enough in Dartmouth to make a visit during the summer.*
Former Dartmouth athletic administrator Jim Fiori continues to get some good publicity for his work as director of athletics at Stony Brook down on Long Island. Long Island Pulse has a story. Former Dartmouth men's lax coach Ricky Sowell, who has the Seawolves program in high gear, gets a mention.
