Tulsa DE/LB is OK With Dartmouth

Oklahoma has become a huge Dartmouth recruiting area and now you can add 6-foot-3, 217-pound defensive end/linebacker Corbin Stall of Tulsa to the list of Big Green recruits. From Tulsa World's Sports Extra:
Union defensive lineman Corbin Stall announced on Tuesday that he will play college football at Dartmouth.

Stall was ranked by the Tulsa World as the area's No. 3 defensive lineman entering the 2010 season and was off to a strong start with four starts in three games before suffering a torn foot ligament that ended his season.
(Gotta assume they mean four "sacks" in three games.)

Sports Extra notes that Stall was ...
... among 25 named to the Nike All-Combine team at the Dallas Nike Football Combine that was attended by about 900 athletes in April.
In its capsule on the 25 All-Combine selections, the ESPN combine page describes Stall this way:
Tall, muscular rush end that uses his long reach to get past linemen. Part of the 2009 Class 6A state championship team.
ESPN's College Football Recruiting page categorizes Stall as an outside linebacker.

Dartmouth came into the 2010 season with no fewer than six players from Oklahoma on the roster and Oklahoma high school quarterback Kirby Schoenthaler of Bartlesville will be making a recruiting visit to Dartmouth this weekend according to OKBlitz.com.

There's another mention of Spring, Texas lineman Scotty Whitmore (Klein Collins HS) heading to Dartmouth in a Houston Chronicle blog.

In addition to former Dartmouth head coach John Lyons taking over as defensive coordinator at the University of New Hampshire – a huge move by UNH by the way – there's a story about one of his former assistants in the news. Tom "Spike" Gilmore has received a three-year extension as head coach at Holy Cross.

Gilmore, a former Dartmouth defensive coordinator, is 45-33 over his first seven years with the Crusaders. He has twice been named the Patriot League coach of the year. There's a story in the Worcester Telegram and a release on the HC website.

The Potomac Patch has a story about the parents of former placekicker Tyler Lavin '05 buying and running the Norwich Inn, across the river in Vermont. From the story:
The Lavins said they found the country inn in remote Vermont when their son, Tyler played football for Dartmouth. They often needed a place to stay during football season and frequently chose the Norwich Inn since it is located just 1.5 miles from the Dartmouth campus.
The story goes on to say the inn was the setting for the Newhart TV show (which is often debated locally) and that guests over the years have included "Theodor Seuss Geisel 'Dr. Seuss,' Tom Brokaw, Jane Pauley, Garry Trudeau, C. Edward Coop (sic) and Hannah Carney (sic). There is also a ghost who has been spotted by several hotel guests."

A Certain UNH Alum (who happens to bunk here at BGA world headquarters ;-) shared a link to a December release about the University of New Hampshire's Graduation Success Rate. The story notes that UNH, "is ranked at the top of the list among its conference competitors as well as near the top of the national rankings, according to the data released by the NCAA in late November."

I wish I could tell you where Dartmouth and the Ivy League stand, but if you check the NCAA GSR page the Ivy League is nowhere to be found. For some reason, the Ivy doesn't release those numbers. Too bad because the impression some people have, judging by message board posts, is that the Ivy League must "have something to hide."

Former Dartmouth football standout Jeff Immelt, Chairman and CEO of General Electric, has been chosen by the President Obama to head his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. (Albany Times Union story) Leave it to our local TV station on last night's news to pronounce Immelt's name as Im-let, like gimlet, not once but twice ;-)

Blue skies on this chilly morning (2 degrees) up here on Moose Mountain and that's unusual for this month. According to the weather service, we had at least some snow on 18 of 21 days to start the month. (Can't wait to get our driveway plowing bill.)
