Bay Hopes To Be Golden

Former Dartmouth defensive end Charles Bay and the US National Team will be trying for the gold medal today at the World Championships of American Football. The United States will be playing Canada in a game that will be streamed live at 1 p.m. from Austria. You can watch the game here. There's a preview story here.

As I retype this blog (for some reason the first blog went bye-bye) I'm watching the France-Germany. The broadcast is terrific, much better than I would have expected, with numerous cameras and replays. I can't understand what they are saying until I hear "quarterback sack," "play-action pass," "fumble," "misdirection," or "first down" come out of the blue. Interestingly, an official just now announced a penalty to the crowd in English and clearly is from the United States.

The Los Angeles Times blog has a story about a Villa Park HS quarterback who visited Dartmouth, Harvard, Brown, Cornell and MIT of all places. Villa Park has no fewer than eight offensive starters with a GPA of 4.0 or higher. Think there may be a few coaches from academic schools checking their highlight films?

Speaking of academic schools, the Patriot League is enjoying its 25th anniversary and as part of the celebration it will reveal its 25th anniversary team on July 25. (link)

For extra credit, what was the Patriot League know as for its first several years? If you answered the Colonial League, give yourself a pat on the back. (The name was changed to Patriot League because of a conflict with the Colonial Athletic Association.)

The Patriot League site, by the way, has a nice one-stop shopping place for offseason football information here. Other leagues could take a lesson ;-)

Who is America's friendliest FBS football coach? ESPN had an interesting way of finding out. Click here for the story. It's fun.
