Gold And All-Tournament

Former Dartmouth defensive end Charles Bay hoped to use his play on the US National Team in the World Championships as a springboard to a free-agent contract with an NFL team. Whether that will happens remains to be seen but the collateral benefits haven't been too shabby. With yesterday's 50-7 win over Canada before a crowd listed at 20,000, Bay earned himself not only a gold medal but also a spot on the all-tournament team.

Find the game story that mentions Bay here.

I watched the start of the game online and the presentation was impressive, from the fireworks to the inflatable helmet the players ran through to the Austrian cheerleaders and the loud and enthusiastic crowd (on one side, at least). Charles led the American team onto the field and rest assured, whether he ever wears a uniform again or heads off to med school, he'll never forget his time in Vienna.

As a former football coach at Tulane, Buddy Teevens understands the appeal of college football in Louisiana and so it's no surprise that he applauds the possibility of the University of New Orleans adding football within the next five years. (link) He's quoted along with Archie Manning in a piece headlined, "Manning, Teevens among those bullish on football in UNO’s future." Among other things, Teevens said:
“I’d encourage them strongly to move forward. I think it’s a unifying force on campus. It creates a greater identity. I think it’s great. I would be tremendously supportive.”
There's a Teevens photo from his role as associated director of the Manning Passing Academy with the story.

There's another very good story about new Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson here. As most stories do, this one talks a little at the end about how well he was raised by his mother and his father Harrison, the former Dartmouth standout who died last year.

Dartmouth rugby coach Alex Magleby, senior Nate Brakeley and the All Americans couldn't quite pull off the sweep of New Zealand as the team from Down Under took the final game of the series, 23-20. Still, Brakeley scored the first try of the final game and the Americans won the series, two games to one. Brakeley is mentioned and quoted in this story and is the lead photo.

Mrs. BGA returns from NYC today on the back half of the free round-trip airline ticket she won in a drawing at a Dartmouth basketball game last winter. Quite the trip that was capped last evening with a trip to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. ... There's a gathering of the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley today and That Certain Hanover High Graduate is hoping she can get a few minutes away from her summer job at Tuck to stop by.
