All's Well

Except for a little water in our basement, all is fine up here on Moose Mountain in the aftermath of Irene. We never lost power and there's nary a branch that blew down. While there was some flooding around the valley we were very fortunate. Another video

A covered bridge in Rockingham, Vt., is shown being swept away here.

Dartmouth has "offered" a running back from Mt. Lebanon, Pa., who ran for 1,983 yards and 29 touchdowns last year. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes of the 5-foot-11, 190 Luke Hagy:
Hagy was being recruited mostly by Ivy League and Patriot League schools until Pitt offered him a scholarship a few weeks ago. Pitt is recruiting Hagy as a safety. Cornell, Dartmouth and Bucknell want him as a running back, and Princeton has been showing more interest lately. He doesn't plan on making a college decision any time soon but has decided he will play football in college . . .
Find his Yahoo page here and a mention on a Penn State blog here. His highlight video is here.

Allen Lessels of the Manchester Union Leader has a note about Bob Lipman, the play-by-play voice of Dartmouth football, moving over the the University of New Hampshire this year. He'll do play-by-play for the first two games and then serve as the color commentator.

Taking Lipman's place at Dartmouth is Dick Lutsk, another broadcast veteran. From a release when he was named to the broadcast crew for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats baseball team:
From 1990-1995, Lutsk served as the Red Sox pre and postgame host at Boston's WRKO/WEEI. Lutsk has also broadcast UNH and Boston College football and basketball, the Beanpot hockey tournament and Manchester Wolves arena football among others. He is currently part of the basketball broadcast team for The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.
Lutsk, who was at Dartmouth practice Saturday morning to do some preliminary research and meet a few people, was most recently the public address announcer at Holy Cross and has been a popular bowling broadcaster, including for the unique New England variety of the game called candlepins. Find an old Q&A with him here about his broadcasting career here.

Wayne Young will return once again as color commentator.

In a preview look at Week 5 opponent Holy Cross, the Worcester Telegram writes:
Holy Cross, which went 4-2 to claim second place in the PL for the fourth time in five years, was picked in the league's preseason poll to finish third behind defending champion Lehigh and Colgate this year. But the Crusaders, who return 12 starters, including four first-team all-league performers, have higher expectations for themselves in 2011.

Check out a video of Cornell grad Bryan Walters making one great catch and then hauling in a 14-yard touchdown throw at the end to help the San Diego Chargers beat the Arizona Cardinals. Walters had a 103-yard kickoff return already this preseason. While the Ivy League has been represented in the NFL by a couple of quarterbacks, an occasional lineman, a surprising number of tight ends, a few linebackers and mostly special teams players in the past decade or so, Walters is bidding to become a rarity, an Ivy League who actually plays wideout in the NFL. Read what quarterback Billy Volek said about him (link):
“I love him. He’s a great route-runner. He’s extremely smart, he’s deceivingly fast, and he works his tail end off. We’ve got a lot of receivers like that. Bryan is just taking advantage of the opportunity he has.”

And finally, I heard a "teaser" about an interview with longtime big league catcher Brad Ausmus '91 on NPR last week but forgot to tune in. Fortunately, a loyal reader sent a link to the Fresh Air segment with Ausmus, who signed with the Yankees before ever wearing a Dartmouth uniform. If this isn't the most interesting interview you've ever heard with a baseball catcher I'd be shocked. Ausmus' name comes up frequently in discussions about players who would make good managers, but to listen to him he could be a sports broadcaster, a news broadcaster or a politician. He's that good. Find his Wikipedia bio here.
