Big Ed

Eddie Smith has plans for a career in the music industry but before plunging into "the business," the first-team All-New England and All-Ivy defensive lineman is going to investigate opportunities in the pro football world. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Smith is expected to attend the University of New Hampshire Pro Day on March 20.

The tentative schedule of other Dartmouth players slated to take part in Pro Days includes corner Shawn Abuhoff at Miami on March 8 and offensive tackle Ryan O'Neill at Northwestern on the same day. Defensive end Matt Oh will be at North Texas on March 13 and tailback Nick Schwieger will be at the Boston College Pro Day, probably March 21.

The NFL actually has rules about Pro Days and they limit scouts to watching players in the "metropolitan area" of their hometown or within a certain distance of their school.

Former special teams standout Chad Hollis has one column in the Daily Dartmouth about what the Ivy League is missing without athletic scholarships and another column about what he's missing, and wouldn't miss, if he didn't play varsity football.

The Huffington Post this week reprised a story that first appeared in last September's Cornell Daily Sun about the Ivy League stand on concussions while the Associated Press has a piece about San Diego Chargers lineman Kris Dielman retiring because of concussion issues.

And finally, we didn't get a whole lot of snow yesterday – maybe six inches – but on top of what we already had it was enough for That Certain Hanover High Senior to cross the road and take a couple of runs down our neighbor's field. Unfortunately there is no lift ;-)
