Read And Debate

Putting too much stock in computer analysis of college football teams is a dicey proposition, but one thing is certain. Poring over the numbers is sure to spur conversation and that's a fun thing in the summer when football news is slow.

Something called Compughter Ratings.com has a look at all of the Ivy League teams from 2011 and among other things it ranks every team along with their best win and worst loss. Here are those numbers for each Ivy and 2012 Dartmouth opponent:

No. 230 Dartmouth
Best win over 154 Brown
Worst loss to 307 Sacred Heart

No. 154 Brown
Best win over 145 Stony Brook
Worst loss to 407 Columbia

No. 407 Columbia
Best win over 154 Brown
Worst loss to 358 Princeton

No. 233 Cornell
Best win over 194 Bucknell
Worst loss to 230 Dartmouth

No. 114 Harvard
Best win over 154 Brown
Worst loss to 153 Holy Cross

No. 243 Penn
Best win over 210 Yale
Worst loss to 234 Villanova

No. 358 Princeton
Best win over 407 Columbia
Worst loss to 243 Penn

No. 210 Yale
Best win over 158 Georgetown
Worst loss to 243 Penn

And . . .
No. 324 Butler
Best win over 298 Dayton
Worst loss to 398 Morehead State

No. 153 Holy Cross
Best win over 114 Harvard
Worst loss to 164 UMass

No. 307 Sacred Heart
Best win over 230 Dartmouth
Worst loss to 313 Marist

Dartmouth's average opponent rank was 238.8, its offensive rank was 284 and defensive rank was 157. Unfortunately, if there's a mention of how many teams are ranked I couldn't find it.

The rankings also include a "Quality of Opponents" ranking and the chance to project one team against another. According to the computer Dartmouth would . . .
  • beat Butler, 31-14
  • lose to Notre Dame, 42-0
  • fall to Patriot League champ Lehigh, 28-16
