You know the football season is close to kicking off (unless you are an Ivy League team) when the first game notes come out. Week 2 opponent Holy Cross has posted notes for its opener Thursday night against New Hampshire.
Finishing up the football practice report and a couple of other writing deadlines kept me from making it to Manchester Thursday night when our Green Machine Cal Ripken baseball team was honored on the field by the Double-A Fisher Cats team. Here's what the PA announcer read to the crowd:
"The Fisher Cats would like to introduce a team with a winning tradition all its own - the Hanover Green Machine! In league play for 2012, this outstanding bunch of boys from Hanover, New Hampshire rolled to a record of 22 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. Along the way, the Green Machine earned the Connecticut Valley North Division title, the Lebanon Invitational Three-Pitch Tournament crown, and the postseason North/South Tournament Championship. It's a team with great chemistry, lots of hustle, plenty of drive, and respect for our grand old game. Please join us as the Fisher Cats proudly welcome the Hanover Green Machine!"
You'll have to excuse me if I have Freshman Trips on the mind. Driving down our narrow dirt road here on the shoulder of Moose Mountain yesterday I was surprised to see a huge coach bus coming the other way. It looked like a 747 coming at me and I had to pull way over to let it by. On the bus were a bunch of wide-eyed freshmen wondering what the wilds of New Hampshire have in store for them over the next few days and what Dartmouth has in store over the next four years.

At roughly the same time That Certain Younger Hanover High Graduate was wrapping up his own Freshman Trip in the mountains of central Pennsylvania. Apparently he had a pretty good time, capped last night by taking in State College Spikes game in the New York-Penn League, and catching the end of a women's soccer game against Stanford.

Meanwhile That Certain Older Hanover High Graduate who is finishing her Sophomore Summer learned she will be leading a Freshman Trip before she heads to the Rockies for The Stretch. Because the Freshman Trip conflicted with finals she thought she couldn't lead one (and we thought she'd actually be home for a few days ;-) but through some sleight of hand she has managed to make it work. What it means is she'll finish her last final, be driven late that night to Moosilauke Lodge, join her hiking group, and then have to be rushed essentially off the trail to Boston's Logan Airport a few days later to make her flight to Calgary for the start of her fall term of field work. Busy, busy, busy.
