Legacy Power

A couple of football alumni offspring are in the news with one planning to come this way and one Dartmouth could probably only dream of recruiting to Hanover.

Patrick Lesch, a football and lacrosse standout at Staples High in Connecticut, has chosen Dartmouth according to the school newspaper, Inklings. Lesch, only a junior at Staples, is the son of former Big Green football and baseball player Brendan Lesch '89 (which will make at least one of his former teammates from the Nutmeg State feel old ;-).

Also . . .

Anna Wilson, daughter of former Dartmouth football and baseball player Harry Wilson, is just 14 but according to ESPN's HoopGurlz (do I have to I tell you how much I dislike that name?) she's already had offers from Maryland, Wisconsin, Virginia, Marquette and Wake Forest for her play on the court. ESPN also reports interest from Duke.

You may have heard of Anna's older brother, another legacy who would have been a dream "get" for Dartmouth. Quarterback by the name of Russell. That's Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks.

From the story on Anna:
Dad had been a two-sport athlete at Dartmouth, and the last cut of the San Diego Chargers in 1980, before going into law. He stood less than 6-feet, which is probably where Russell gets his infamous stature. Anna, 5-8 with feet still growing, takes after her tall mom, Tammy, with whom she lives in Richmond.
The New York Post writes of the Jets' new general manager:
Everyone recognizes that Idzik is Dartmouth-bright, but he is a rookie . . .
That would be former Big Green wide receiver John Idzik '82. ...
The Dartmouth men's ice hockey team saw its season come to an end last night with a 5-2 loss at Union, which swept the playoff series. Dartmouth finished the season 15-14-5.
Former Dartmouth Athletic Director Ted Leland, who gained national acclaim as AD at Stanford, is in his second term running the department at Pacific, his alma mater. Last month he hired former Dartmouth assistant Andy Smith as his new field hockey coach. When he was at Stanford, Leland hired Buddy Teevens as his football coach and Dartmouth's Bobby Clark and Steve Swanson as his men's and women's soccer coaches. Now he's looking for a basketball coach at Pacific.

Don't expect him to be dialing (603) but if he's smart – which Dr. Ted Leland is – he might just dial (847), which happens to be the area code for Evanston, Ill. Northwestern just let coach Bill Carmody go and just about every story you read talks about what a terrific coach he is. The former Princeton coach would be right at home coaching the Tigers ;-)
It is fair to say the "new" Hanover Inn has been receiving mixed reviews. Check out photos of the Inn's new restaurant PINE slated to open shortly.
