It's All About The Tempo

Football Study Hall has taken a look at the "tempo trend" in college football and posted some interesting numbers. Essentially, what FSH did was divide minutes of possession time for a particular team by the minutes played by that team to determine plays per minute.

The  fastest team in college football last year? No, not Oregon. It was Houston with 3.02 plays per minute. Oregon was next at 2.83.

The Fastest
Houston 3.02
Oregon 2.83
Texas Tech 2.69
Oklahoma 2.68
Texas A&M 2.67
Middle Tennessee 2.64
Louisiana Tech 2.64
Troy 2.64
Tulsa 2.61
Baylor 2.59

The Slowest
Alabama 2.02
Navy 2.07
Rutgers 2.09
Army 2.09
Wisconsin 2.09
Stanford 2.10
Temple 2.10
Central Florida 2.11
Ohio State 2.11
Georgia Tech 2.12
Eastern Michigan 2.12

You can tell where this is going, can't you?

I expected Harvard with its no-huddle offense to be the fastest in the Ivy League but the Crimson was well down the list.

The Ivy League
1. Princeton 2.62
2. Yale 2.54
3. Cornell 2.42
4. Columbia 2.37
5. Harvard 2.36
6. Penn 2.29
7. Brown 2.25
8. Dartmouth 2.14
The Dartmouth has a story today about televising of Dartmouth sports events that quotes senior safety Garrett Waggoner.
Congratulations to the Dartmouth baseball and softball teams for clinching their divisions and advancing to the Ivy League Championship Series.

The baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Harvard to improve to 31-7 overall and 15-5 in the Ivy League. The Big Green will play Gehrig Division winner Columbia for the Ivy title this weekend in New York City. Dartmouth swept its two games against the Lions in New York City earlier this season.

I particularly like this quote in The Dartmouth from Dartmouth coach Bob Whalen, who knows more baseball than most but has a nice way of keeping the game simple:
“We try and throw a lot of strikes and play really, really good catch. And that’s always been our thing.”
The Big Green broke the school record for wins while earning its sixth Red Rolfe Division title in a row.

The Dartmouth softball team won its second North Division title by taking three of four from Harvard over the week. The Big Green will bid for its first Ivy League title this weekend at South Division champion Penn. The D has a story about the clinching.

Dartmouth and Penn split their two games this spring.
