This And That

Wandering through Floren Varsity House the other day I stopped to take another look at the sign in the entrance and realized most folks who stop by the blog probably haven't been through the door. Some familiar names helped get the building off the ground. Click on the pic to read them.

The confusion came from the following curious addendum to a newspaper mention that offensive lineman Zach Husain of Evanston Township HS (Ill.) was going to Dartmouth University: "contingent on getting into the school. (link)

Not to worry. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Husain is in the official recruiting class. You can find his 2011 highlight video here.
Dartmouth baseball plays host to Harvard in a doubleheader today on Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park. The Big Green needs just one win in its four-game series with the Crimson this weekend (they play two  in Massachusetts tomorrow) to clinch its sixth consecutive Rolfe Division championship. Find the game notes here.

Dartmouth came into the weekend one game behind Gehrig Division leader Columbia in the race to host the Ivy League Championship Series next weekend. Because the Big Green swept the Lions in the regular season, Dartmouth needs only to tie Columbia for best record to be the home team for the ILCS.

To that end, Dartmouth has to win one more game against Harvard than Columbia wins this weekend in its four-game set with Penn, which began yesterday and finishes today. Until the seventh inning of the first game of yesterday's twinbill in New York City it appeared Penn was going to do Dartmouth a huge favor. But the Quakers' 2-1 lead was erased by a two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh and the Lions went on to win the second game handily.

Given Columbia's sweep yesterday, here's where things stand:

Dartmouth now has to win at least three of four games against Harvard this weekend to host. Three Big Green wins and a Penn sweep tomorrow and Dartmouth hosts. Four Dartmouth wins and a Columbia split and the Green hosts.

A Columbia sweep tomorrow and it doesn't matter what Dartmouth does. The Lions will host.

Got all that? Maybe this will make things clearer:

Gehrig Division
Columbia 14-4 (two league games remaining)
Cornell 11-7
Princeton 9-9
Penn 7-11

Rolfe Division
Dartmouth 11-5 (four league games remaining)
Harvard 7-9
Yale 8-10
Brown 3-15

Dartmouth is 27-7 overall. Columbia is 22-19.
