Former Dartmouth quarterback Ed Lucas '04 banged out four hits, drove in two runs and scored twice in just his third big league appearance yesterday as he helped the lowly Miami Marlins sweep the New York Mets. The Sun Sentinel's story begins this way:
It all started with the arrival of Ed Lucas.
The Marlins were mired in a nine-game losing streak when the Dartmouth product debuted Friday after 10 years in the minor leagues.
They are 3-0 since then after completing their first series sweep of the season with an 11-6 victory over the Mets on Sunday at Marlins Park.
"I will take absolutely zero credit for that," Lucas said. "I got here and I didn't even know they were on this kind of a long losing streak. But everybody was still upbeat, positive."
Lucas deserves a good measure of credit after going 4-for-4 Sunday with a double and two RBI. He was 5 for 8 and drove in three runs in the series.Earlier, the Miami Herald noted the second former Big Green QB to make a splash in the city, writing:
Ed Lucas isn’t the first former Dartmouth quarterback to make it as a professional in Miami.
That distinction belongs to Jay Fiedler, who played for the Dolphins from 2000 to 2004.The blurb finishes this way:
But Lucas is the first to collect a major-league hit here.
“He was our knight in shining armor on the football team,” Lucas said of Fiedler, who was all-Ivy League at Dartmouth from 1991 to ’93. “I went there to play football, but I was only on the team my freshman year. Third string. Never got in a game. I got to make the road trips. Carried the clipboard. Had the hat on and the headset.”

Harvard defensive end Zach Hodges has been named to the College Football Performances Awards Football Championship Subdivision Defensive Lineman watch list. The Harvard release notes that Hodges was chosen to the . . .. . . All-Ivy League first team and was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness.com as a sophomore in 2012. Hodges led Harvard with nine sacks and 16 tackles for a loss. He made 32 stops overall, including 23 solo tackles last season. As for what other players were chosen to the Defensive Lineman watch list, your guess is as good as mine because for some curious reason, CFPA either doesn't post its lists to the web or makes them incredibly hard to find. Very frustrating.
