Chris Wilkerson |
The story details Wilk's progression from standout Eastern Illinois defensive lineman to coaching at his alma mater, to being on the staff San Jose State, and finally to coming to Dartmouth in 2005. It's a terrific story about one of the true good guys in the business and is well worth checking out.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has a piece about four friends who started at Kiski Area High School with dreams of playing Division I football. As they prepare for their senior year the dream is in reach for the four players, including a wide receiver/defensive back named Joey Brungo who reports that Dartmouth is one of his most persistent courters. Already holding offers from Dartmouth and Penn (if the recruiting services have it right, which isn't always the case) is Sherman Oaks, Calif., receiver Daniel Kahn, who plays at Notre Dame HS. He is listed at 5-foot-11, 160.Dartmouth was the only Ivy among 13 schools that "offered" Miami Columbus linebacker Nick McBeath, who has committed to Florida International.

Did you watch the British Open yesterday? As a sports editor at a newspaper in Pennsylvania and then an assistant sports editor in these parts writing headlines was one of my responsibilities. That's why I sometimes try to guess what the papers – and a few days later Sports Illustrated – will use for a headline. Or should use. Here's my pick for the golf:
A Phil Great StoryI still think the best headline I ever wrote had to do with an AP story on how some very good DePaul men's basketball teams would unravel at tournament time because they started thinking too much – or too little maybe. My headline (which worked better if you knew the team nickname):
Demons Haunt DePaulAnd my worst headline ever, in huge type across the top of the front sports page, was something about how Fernando Venezuela had a great game for the Dodgers. The good news is that I spelled Venezuela correctly. The bad news, of course, is that the pitcher's name was Valenzuela.
The beauty of the Internet is when I do something equally stupid I can fix it. That day years ago the headline was on the front doorsteps of homes all over Southcentral Pennsylvania.
